Disturbed – Indestructible Lyrics 16 years ago
If David wrote this song for the troops then he did a good job. My cousin was deployed in Baghdad with the 82nd and whenever they would go on raids they would listen to this song before hand.

Disturbed – Torn Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song kinda works well with the relationship I have with a friend. We both developed really strong feelings for eachother but entered the dreaded 'Friend Zone' where she insists we be "just friends". Now there is this "fire inside" and we are going to "let it burn till the image fades away". And "I'm not the only one, yearning to fulfill you, one willing to risk it all..." She has found someone else.

Its what the song means to me anyways. The whole song doesn't fit for it but I think its in the right direction.

Tool – Eon Blue Apocalypse Lyrics 16 years ago
Although I don't think this song is supposed to be completely devoted to Adam Jones' dog (Eon) who died, I can definately see Adam sitting on his couch at his house in pajama pants and a t-shirt playing this song, which just sounds very sad and remorseful.

Tool – Triad Lyrics 16 years ago
I see this song as more or less a victory dance. For going through the album Lateralus and letting it change you into a better person, and then celebrating that change.

Tool – Parabol Lyrics 16 years ago
Parabol and parabola are with out a doubt linked. They are mirror images. Parabol is more meditation and collecting of thoughts where Parabola is joyous, celebration and openess.

These songs can be depicted in meaning either making love (defined differently then having sex in my opinion) or simply the celbration of life. "Being alive and breathing." To me the song means more the latter. Ignoring all of the pain, the difficulties and so on and simply being happy to be alive and breathing.

There are alot of hidden things in Lateralus. As mentioned in this video (I cant take credit for this one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY&feature=channel_page if you re-arrange the songs of Lateralus in a specific fibbonacci set: 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10 the songs flow together alot more smoothly. The ending of each song leads directly into the next song. List as follows: Parbol, Parabola, Schism, Ticks and Leeches, Mantra, Lateralus, Faip de Oiad, Grudge, Triad, Eons Blue Apocolypse, Reflection, Patient, Disposition.

Tool – Forty Six & 2 Lyrics 16 years ago
One thing people should note is that acquiring two more chromosomes doesnt necesarily mean great things will happen. For instance rabbits have more chromosomes than us and all they do is eat, sleep and have sex... well maybe that is the purpose of life...

Its not sure that the two chromosomes will help us out, maybe what we really have to do is loose two. But thats not the point, the song is just introducing change and using chromosomes as a metaphor.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 16 years ago
This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY&feature=channel_page

The begining drum beat to the song, I think it almost feels like a heartbeat. Like this song is a life force, what should be your life force.

"With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out.
I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may
just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may
just go where no one's been."

This is what I feel every time I listen to the song. It sums up the emotion of what I feel every time the beat of this part hits.

One of their most powerful songs imo, not my favorite (that is saved for parabol/a) but again one of the strongest.

Tool – Disgustipated Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe the face value of this song is obvious. 'life feeds on life, this is necessary' It is just saying what we all are basically. We must eat to survive, and to do that we must eat life in one shape or another. So what I get out of it is vegetarianism* is kinda pointless because it is denying nature.

Fun Fact of the Day: I read in the Revolver magazine on tool that one of Tool's earlier concerts was sponsered by pro-life vegitarian activists type people and after the show the leader came up to Maynard and said "wow that song (she was refering to disgustipated) was great!" Just goes to show the ignorance of some of the people out there.

I would reccomend any tool fan to pick up a copy of it, there is alot of discussions just like this specifically from the band members in the magazine.

Tool – Disposition Lyrics 16 years ago
In live performances Tool plays this directly following Lateralus (as in no breaks) and is followed straight away by reflection (again, no breaks). Therefore the three songs are linked, similar to the way parabol/a is linked. But this song standing alone means (according to me) to be open to new ideas and when someone 'mentions something to you' your entire life can change, 'the weather will change'. Your life = the weather in this context.

In relation to Lateralus and Reflection it is the bridge between the ideas prestented in Lateralus and the discovery found in Reflection. The persons 'weather' changed because of Lateralus, and then the new situation leads to Reflection.

Tool – Rosetta Stoned Lyrics 16 years ago
What I think:

Maynard always has the lyrics of songs tie together in their albums. And the last three songs (excluding triad) Rosetta Stoned, Intension, Right in Two, seems to be a critique of humanity to me. So I tend to believe this is more based on humanity's shortcommings rather than drug abuse (drug abuse could be considered one I suppose but this is more important than just that).

Rosetta Stone is a program to help people learn new languages so I think this character in this song got 'stoned' from hearing a new 'language' which in this case was the aliens' form of communication. And by stoned I don't mean good times and laughter I mean his mind got completely thrown in the gutter and he can no longer think straight because of what he was shown. Because the alien form of communicating is completely beyond the capabilities of a human mind and he was reduced to a babaling idiot and is now therefore in a hospital. Pleading with people "You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said". And not comprehending people "And can anyone tell me why
Y'all sound like Peanuts parents?"

If I remember correctly the tone and pace of the lyrics changes from before the lyrics "You'd better. You'd better. You'd better. You'd better listen" where it was fast paced and detailed, and then those lyrics came, whether they are the characters words or the aliens, and then after that the message is delivered ("Then he looked right through me"), all sane thoughts are lost to the wind and for the most part the speech is slower (easier to understand anyway) where the persons mind is not as detailed as it used to be and more aloof.

I think his reference to "But I forgot my pen" was the characters last sane thought before he was shown, whatever it was he was shown. Thinking to himself almost jokingly, 'i need to record this but i dont have my pen...*blam*'

So from here I venture from things which are shown in the lyrics to what I believe is the purpose of the song. Like I said earlier, near the end of the album it becomes more evident of describing the faults of humanity, and i think this song is just to show how pathetic our minds really are. For instance, compare our minds to an ant. Each indivual ant has a job or purpose, and ways of going about that purpose, they also have problems which impede them and rewards from achieving goals (the prosperity of the hive). Now compare the ants lives to us, we (humans) are probably unknown objects to them, natural phenomena* if you will. If an ant was shown one shred of our consicousness I believe that ant's mind would probably be overwhelmed. Even if we were just trying to warn it of a flood coming and what would be the "The details of [their] ending." So, for the sake of argument put ourselves in the position of the ants and the humans are the aliens. I now believe you can see where I am coming from where the person would be "Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in [his] position", brain dead and unable to keep control of his simple bodily funtions (taking a shit when he is supposed to).

So for all of our overwhelming and vital problems we are really not that important. Quite pathetic actually. And as a side note I think it can be derived that, the thought that we even think we understand the smallest bit of a higher intelligence's intention or reason, whether it be a god or an alien species, is purly arrogant.

I kinda think I am biased with this since I am big into sci-fi so my imagination can wander in this direction but I don't see that as a bad thing.

So I think you guys can understand where I am coming from with all of this, I understand that the vocals for Tool always have multiple levels and different ways of looking at it, which is one thing that makes their music art instead of just the pointles babling we here most of the time today. So I think there is no 'right' interpretation to the song, only your interpretation.
