I wonder if this is the song that got left off the Narnia soundtrack. I remember hearing awhile ago that she had written something for the movie but Disney didn't like it and ended up going with Regina Spektor instead and she was going to put it on the new album. It fits quite well within the context of the movie/book at any rate. |

I think second verse is about before Mary actually gave birth. "Mary, carry your shame" is a pretty obvious reference to Mary being unwed when she conceived Jesus. "Well past all those eyes across the avenue" meaning that she knows who what's really happened and knows God will protect her, but at the same time she can't help but feel paranoid that people are staring, that someone will find out and tell, and that she'll be stoned to death, as was customary for women who became pregnant out of wedlock at that time. The rest of the verse, specifically "You know I'll do anything you want me to" Is Joseph promising to protect her and Jesus in the womb and go along with whatever God tells him to do after he is visited by the angels who confirm that her child is, in fact, the son of God.

This is actually just a cover. This song was written by Rudy Clark and someone else recorded it in the early 60's.
I still don't understand why people think songs have to have some deep meaning in order to be good. This is a just good, catchy song and should be taken as such. I doubt George would have even argued with that.
