I saw Missy Higgins last night at a mini-concert/book signing with Harlan Coben. She answered some questions and explained alot about the song writing process. Someone asked what was the meaning behind "Sugarcane". She said that alot of her music is "autobiographical" and because of that she doesn't like to reveal the meanings of some songs because they are very personal. She said that this song in paticular has a private meaning and she didn't want to reveal the meaning because doing so would violate the privacy of a friend. She then sat and said "I'm trying to figure out how to explain it without giving too much away"... and then she said that "Sugarcane is about how people tend to build you up and build you up and then as soon as you start to believe them they tear you down" and that the chorus of the song is a metaphor for that because sugarcane grows and grows and as soon as its impressive they cut it down. She also said that the Baby Ballerina part of the song was inspired by a black and white photograph she saw in a hotel she stayed in LA. It was a picture of a little girl doing a ballet pose with a somber and sad looking expression and that in the background there was a shadowy figure. She said that she thought the shadowy figure in the background was the reason the little ballerina was so sad. |
