I believe that Ann is suicidal. When youre suicidal they put you in a wing of the hospital called the psych ward.
Everything there is designed so that there is no way you could possibly commit suicide, including being checked on by staff every 15 minutes- hence the "rooms to live in, but no room to give in" line that comes immediately after the one about the hospital man. |

For some reason I always hear "and you will look at me and say, 'dont you just wish I went away'" where someone else is speaking to Stephen and feels like they are unwanted by him. |

you're thinking too abstract. yes, the last line is a general statement, but you're assuming that the entire song is talking about this as a general situation. The song is pretty straightforward, it's about a spouse departing and breaking a family up. |
