It's definitely about her father. (I think I may have read an interview at some point...) Amanda Palmer goes to great lengths to keep saying "he" and "him", making sure 'father' or 'dad' or whatever way of saying it to completely disabuse any ideas of the relation between them. As for the "half corrective surgery", remember AP is a c-section baby so that would make sense as far as her birth goes. The black hole is a sort of aloofness associated with it. The pills to take it back I assume refer to birth control of some kind (maybe morning after, plan b…). I'd considered the intersex (hermaphrodite) view, but it seemed off if she calls both halves 'evils' I love this song. |

To say this song has no sexual meanings is silly. What Bert said about "a relationship with someone you love so much that you could absolutely kill them" and "Being a part of someone's life means you get to know everything you can't stand about that person" makes me relate it to 'loving someone so much you've ended up destroying [parts of] them.' The first few years I listened to it, I thought about committing suicide, but having gone back it sounds more like watching someone else do it/helping them. The petals part got me thinking about anatomy - the abuse of sex (and as another commenter said, rape) and passion all rolled into what essentially means to transform something beautiful into something awful. Maybe this song is about two people just hurting each other in grotesque ways, trying to find compromise, since "most of the time, those [the things you can' stand] are the things you end up loving the most" - so 'if we cut out the bad then we'd have nothing left' of the relationship. Then perhaps "losing [whoever's] head" is a metaphor for changing, leaving the other behind ('couldn't come'). Great song, those are just my stupid ideas. |

I think what the others have said about coming out have got it, especially mbacka and yesterdaystomorrow1 from the beginning, "in the dark... are you ready to go" about being read to come out, followed by part that's very empowering in her gender. "rainbow shirt [homosexuality] ribbed [supported by] in acid love [painful]" but after all, isn't pain part of truth? like the idea of not feeling pain when you're asleep so you pinch yourself. I think that the realness of their love makes it hurt even more on the other hand, their lives are filled with "plastic love" which sounds like a cover or a decoy, keeping them safe from society, but fake all the same "it's not just you/she loved me too" sounds more of that decoy, like the girl Tegan's with is actually seeing another guy to cover her own ass about her sexuality. Tegan's confronting the 'I'm-not-gay' boyfriend. this very much is about the regression of a relationship. Tegan is wanting to be real and stand out to the actuality of her being gay ("fight for the right to believe in myself/fight for the right to release myself") and the other girl is afraid. I think Tegan realizes that her relationship with this girl cannot last because of her need to be honest with herself and is asking for the time to stop and think, to take a break from their tired romance she is adamant about staying her ground, asserting that she is going to be qualified for and satisfy the girl she's going to be with. sorry if I butchered it, but just had to put in my two cents 'cause I LOVE this song |

I think jenniwilliams and danilenae are both right. I figured it was hardcore about sex, the bridge spells that out pretty well. But the first verse seems to be describing the ambiance of the bathroom stall. That is, drunken sex in the bathroom, and then coming back to reality with a hangover and having the previous night's occurrences taking weight. When looking at it more critically that way, the last line of the second verse spells a damn clear picture of what may have happened. That's what I think about it, I could be wrong. I <3<3<3 this song. |
