I have loved this song for a really long time, favorite off the album and have never tried to find an exact meaning to it, just enjoyed how beautiful it was...but i have to say, i like your interpretation. When someone is dying we tend to shade the pain with denial, convincing ourselves that it is just not happening - i mean its just not fathomable when dealing with those who are close to you.
"Best to keep things in the shalllow end, cause i never quite learned how to swim" - its better to know as little information/details about the condition of the said individual....they dont know how or havent learned how to cope with the feelings that come along with the situation.
"I just didn't want to know..i dont want to know"...didnt want to know the reality, refusing and covering up the truth |

Wow, definately my favorite Chevelle song by far. It says so much with saying so little. Saw them a few weeks ago (been wanting to for years) and it was incredible...I got more chills than ever during this song. damn does that man know how to sing! |

actually, I'm not...there used to be a few different members in the band when "And ther name was treason" (which contains this particular song we are discussing) came out as opposed to the other members that are in it now. If you were smart, you would be able to tell that there are two different singers between the albums. Email them, I bet you'll get the same answer |

"I'll put a little sour in your sweet, you've got so much fucking tongue in cheek. You want what you could never have" Definately my favorite lines of the song.
I think he is saying that she may be acting sweet but he'll expose her for who she really is ("I'll put a little sour in your sweet"). She is smiling on the outside but biting her tongue or refraining from how she truly feels and he is calling her out on her bullshit/fakeness |

xchaosx, the first two lines are a combination of two things. It is about his best friend passing away and how he wishes he could have been there before she did (before the sun will rise). And at the same time it is about him missing his girlfriend because she reminds him of his best friend. |

Ok, to clear up the whole "butterflies at the mailbox" line....one of the members of the band wrote that because I (his girlfriend) used to send him letters and cards because we were in a long distance relationship since we first started dating (I live in New York, he lives in Maryland). He never knew when he was going to receive something from me so the anticipation of going to the mailbox every day gave him butterflies because of the idea or possibility of something being there for him. |
