Harry Nilsson – Coconut Lyrics 15 years ago
I always interpreted it as "hair of the dog"...Lime in the coconut gave you a stomachache, lime in the coconut to cure it...like drinking more alcohol to cure a hangover.

Under The Influence Of Giants – Stay Illogical Lyrics 16 years ago
Reminds me of how I felt about the girl my ex dated after me. The girl before me tried to warn me about him, and then when I didn't listen, I had to go through hell with him, and wound up trying to warn the girl after me. Apparently it's happened to him a lot.

I mean, I moved on and all. The guy I dated after him was the best ever (this also happens to him a lot), and we're married now. But I cringe every time I see that he's found a new girl.

Iron & Wine – Boy with a Coin Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems to echo my own personal sorrow in life. The middle verse especially.

I think it may have to do with an impersonal idea of god, a feeling of abandonment, especially in light of tragedy and violence.

The second verse, to me, is the most perfect description of sexual violence I've ever heard. Even the way he sings it seems to express a kind of cold lonelieness that I've only seen in cases of sexual violence against women.

"How could god let this happen to me?" is a concept I've heard a lot from abused women. The image of god making man, and leaving him to circle the world (like the sky or the sun?) is heart wrenching, like the little boy who receives no reason for his father leaving and has to grow up wondering why.

The song gets to me, but also feels somehow hopeful. If someone else is singing it, I must not be alone in these feelings.

Straylight Run – Who Will Save Us Now? Lyrics 17 years ago
I think everyone is missing the point.

It's not just a stab at government, greed and selfishness (although it certainly is that, but secondary and tertiary), it's actually about fear. It's about people (who make up the majority of people) who rely on someone who claims to know what to do, instead of making your own choices and living your own life and trying to change the world around you. We want a place to hide, a king to rule us, a god to protect us.

Helen Keller once said "People don't like to think. When we think, we reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant." The world is a scary place. It's a hell of a lot easier to let someone else do the thinking. It's easier to nod your head with government and religous figures than to read your bible, read the news and interview people of opposing stances.

It's also hard for people to admit they're wrong, so if someone tells them what to think, and they blindly accept it as unquestionable truth, they don't ever have to feel wrong.

It's a stab at people who are fearful, lazy and directionless. In the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast, they sing "Lafou I'm afraid I've been thinking" "A dangerous pastime" "I know!". It's easy to giggle at that, but it's true. Thinking is dangerous. It could change your whole way of life. When I started thinking, it made most of my family look down on me. Do I regret it? I used to, occaisonally I do, but I love my fiance, I love what I believe in, I love my new church and my friends, and I'm finally happy with who I am. Who would choose to live secretly suicidal and alone, pleasing others and hating yourself than to take a little shit to find a better and happier life?

The answer is almost everyone alive today. That is what this song means to me.
