>>Well, welcome to New York

New York is always romanticized as the city that never sleeps, further alluded to in

>>People just tire to fight the constant battle

I think it's about getting burned out in the business of life, without having time to stop and smell the roses. Walking around in NYC inspires you to do all the big stuff you want to do in your life (be famous, be a movie star, be rich/successful), but realistically, most people won't end up being there. The people that do have to kill themselves to get to that point.

Just my two cents anyways.

A lot of references to wrestling with religion here, probably emphasizing the tradition more so than anything.

>>Some old-timer pioneer Who believes with shaken faith

Time has taken a toll on his faith, probably both in God and humanity

>>A busted homesteader Who believes in virgin grace

I think of the Virgin Mary, who was known for her grace (Hail Mary, full of grace)

I also love the line:
>> I met you the old-fashioned way

Meeting people in person, not through reliance on computers, cellphones, etc.
Beautiful.

Why? – A Sky for Shoeing Horses Under Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm from Ohio, and the drug that Yoni refers to is definitely not "Khat" or "Qat". It's "cot", as a slang form for Oxycontin, the pain-relieving prescription drug. Abuse of it is pretty rampant in our area, at least where I'm from.

That would make the most sense with "my tennis shoes go in an out of the frame". The drug screws with your focus, making your eyes look like little pinholes. "Khat" on the other hand is evidently cocaine-like, probably an effect that wouldn't make as much sense in this context.

Also, I always thought the lines were:

"when I'm high" instead of "when I'm eyed"

"Kings fall to Ponzi" (as in the investment scheme, but I guess the 'pawns' interpretation makes more sense in the context of the chess game)

Great song though!
