Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about a guy with a lazy eye (i.e. him) that basically sees double all the time, or askew in whatever way so that he doesn't have the visual focus that other people have. And all his life he's been waiting for a girl that he can directly connect with, which to date has been impossible (visually anyway) due to his lazy eye. But he has something way stronger, Shine...(use the definition from the movie The Shining -- the gift of being able to communicate without speaking).

A few lines and phrases that help convey my understanding:

"I've been waiting for this moment all my life" -- (to be able to 'see' someone clearly))

"I've been waiting for this silence, all my life" (getting to the level where he can overcome his lazy eye and relate). "It's just a matter of time. To appear sad, with this same old decent lazy eye, fixed to rest on you. So clear but so untrue."
--the only emotion people perceive of him, and his lazy eye, is sadness, even though he doesnt feel sad.
An "untrue" rifle is one whose scope isn't lined up properly so the aim is off. But anyway, he is able to shine which is way cooler.

"Everyone is so intimately rearranged" (when you have a lazy eye, things get jumbled like a kaleidoscpoe but in a completely personal and individual way because no one sees you like I do; therefore my vision of you is more beautiful.) So he is pontificating about how with a lazy eye, everything is so intimately rearranged.
But "Everyone can focus clearly with such shine"

and then...
"Everyone's so focused clearly with such shine!!" (fuck my lazy eye, I can see her with more focus that you will ever be capable of. I can shine, bitch.)

(Get fired up, he's got her in his lazy-eye-ass tracks!)

"Lost and loaded (a great pun on "locked and loaded"). "Still this same old decent lazy eye, fixed on your gaze" (Maybe I can't stare you in the eye like others can, but I can stare into your spirit. And I love my lazy eye because it allowed me to see you in a way that no one else in the world can).
"That's why I say I relate. I said we relate. It's so fun to relate." (love is all about relating, and seeing that person clearly, and relating. Fuck his lazy eye. He knows how to relate better than people with 20/20 vision do.

And then he chills for a minute to appreciate his newly understood self, and then he and the whole band go crazy with incredibly uplifting noise.

The National – Slow Show Lyrics 16 years ago
This song relates to me, a 35 year-old man who did a lot of partying in his 20s who is now married with a one year-old daughter, in a much different way.

"Standing at the punch table swallowing punch
can't pay attention to the sound of anyone
a little more stupid, a little more scared
every minute more unprepared"

---I used to be great at parties....very sociable and fun. Now I think about my responsibilities and the fact that I shouldn't be out "swallowing punch" while my baby is at home. I am completely unprepared to succeed in this atmosphere.

"I made a mistake in my life today
everything I love gets lost in drawers
I want to start over, I want to be winning
way out of sync from the beginning"

--I have been irresponsible in the past and effed things up. Of course, my new responsibility is way too important and I need to step up and get my brain and heart around it.

"I wanna hurry home to you
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain
god I'm very, very frightened
I'll overdo it"

--Yup, this is how I feel every day that I am leaving the office, a friend's house, or anywhere, these days, when I am coming home to my daughter. The Slow Show is whatever performance I am putting on, slow and at her level, with the intent of cracking her up and building love.

"Looking for somewhere to stand and stay
I leaned on the wall and the wall leaned away
Can I get a minute of not being nervous
and not thinking of my dick
My leg is sparkles, my leg is pins
I better get my shit together, better gather my shit in
You could drive a car through my head in five minutes
from one side of it to the other"

--Again, feeling uncomfortable in the party, singles environment in which I used to thrive. "The wall leaned away" means that the environment is no longer accepting of me and wants me out of there, and home where I belong. The party with the punch bowl isn't where I belong anymore. I need to "stop thinking of my dick" because my days of fornication are over.

"You know I dreamed about you
for twenty-nine years before I saw you
You know I dreamed about you
I missed you for
for twenty-nine years"

--I dreamed of true love my whole life, and found it when she was born.

I think the war/political interpretations are accurate.

we'll stand by the pool
we'll throw out our gold medals

is a reference to Muhammad Ali (BOXER (ahem) and outspoken anti-war activist) allegedly throwing his 1960 Olympic gold medal in the Ohio River.
