It's also possible she is deceased and all the lyrics therefore make sense. Or possibly she is just dead to him based on their relationship, or lack of. The rest of the lyrics and J's comment about the difficulty performing it lead me to believe it's about something deeper than a lost lover. However, "House Carpenter" has been around forever and has many varied versions and meanings. So it's likely meant to be vague and open. |

My favorite Hurt song and possibly my favorite song ever. So incredibly powerful, beautiful, tragic, and raw. After following Hurt for years and seeing no one has even mentioned this, I feel compelled to throw in my opinion. It's about J's mother. For fucks sake how has no one come up with this? His mother was very religious(banning rock music.. any hurt fan should know this) and with the hindsight of Vol 2's Talking to God it's pretty obvious it's about his difficult relationship with his mother. Hence his comment that it is the most difficult song for him to song. Think before you speak people. |

This song is about J's father. There is a great half hour interview with J and Paul on wjjo.com under podcasts in which they do the acoustic version of this song and discuss the meaning(very rare that they do this). Excellent insight into the mind of J Loren. All hurt fans need to check it out. Keep it up Hurt you guys are simply amazing. |
