I've listened to this song so many times, but it just occurred to me today that they commit suicide at the end. They've felt "totally alive," so they've experienced what they wanted to in life, and now they know they're fucked, so they're prepared to half a pile of pills and "float above this dirty bed, " indicating that their souls are going to become separate from their physical bodies.
When he says, "We'll see our trial sometime soon," he may be expressing that they'll either see a trial in life (for the drug abuse/child neglect), or in the afterlife, when they're judged in the eyes of a higher power.
That's my interpretation. Either way, this song is really beautiful. It kind of reminds me of Lolita, how the main characters are kind of awful people who did terrible things, but you sympathize with them nonetheless. |

I have nothing to add about the possible meaning of this song, but I submit the following lyrics for consideration:
"And if you think you see with just your eyes, you're mad. Lisa learned a lot from putting on a blindfold, when she knew she had been bad. She met another blind kid at a fancy dress; it was the best sex that she ever had."

This song is incredible. The imagery on the album as a whole is just so extensive, it's hard to determine what many of the songs are trying to say. Even so, I'm pretty sure this one is about a new parent. Beyond that? No clue. |

Great song. As I interpret it, the narrator has dreams of traveling and making experiences, but he has to deal with leaving someone behind. And she's kinda bitter about it. I can relate. |

I really love this line:
"My violets are blood red,
And my roses are blue."
I think this song conveys something we've all felt before. When nothing in life ever changes and it feels like the good things are passing you by. You start to get depressed, despite having nothing to really complain about. |

Excellent song. Not only were the lyrics haunting, morbid, and terrifying, Justin's presentation pulls it off extremely well.
"I cocked the pistol pulled the trigger and all I saw was red
I gently stroke her arm as she lies lifeless on her back
Then I placed the barrel in my mouth
All I saw was black"
Excellent way to end the song, with those lyrics. It gave me chills just listening to it, but ending on that terrified me for a bit. Now it's one of my favorite songs, definitely great for venting. |

Based on the first and last versus, it seems to be a song about a secret infatuation for a waitress- but hearing the second one, it seems like she's so distracted with the serious parts of her life, she can't seem to get out and have fun. She may have hurt him before... I'm not really sure. Anyone, opinions on this? |

I'm involved in a long-distance relationship right now, and this song describes it perfectly. Definitely one of my favorite songs of all time. I love the way this line sounds- "If you're sleeping, are you dreaming? If you're dreaming, are you dreaming of me?" Justin is an absolute genius- it's good to see he doesn't just write amazing tragic songs, but also romantic ones. |

hxcnuggets, you could be right, but really, Twilight is such a poorly written book-- there's no way Stephanie Meyer could come close to describing the hatred that is expressed in this song. Anyway, yeah, I agree with everyone who mentioned James being Justin's childhood friend... really fun song to listen to, if you don't mind a little anger. >:) |

The 21st was the date when Justin used to get his monthly anti-depression medication, and had to cope with the memories of all that he's done. It's also explaining his post-suicidal experience, when his parents distanced from him and his older brother was so upset with what he'd done. Definitely an apt depiction of how much one person's suicidal tendencies hurt everyone around them. It's really the most selfish thing someone can do. |

I don't really think it's based on a childhood experience.... the 'childhood toy' remark could be a metaphor for someone who pushed her around like a helpless little kid. I think it's an abusive relationship, and she's getting sweet revenge. I love those lyrics: "Yeah, you're getting scared now, piggy/ Go ahead and squeal" How nice it must feel to get payback against that pig. >:) |

I agree, 'self books, love crooks steal her away' is about him trying to keep a girl who's going through a short depression. But you wouldn't think that just by hearing it the first time- the music to it sounds so... cute! |

I don't think he killed her... ivycreed could be telling the truth. But when I hear the lines like "I scratch at your waistline, your doll hair" I definitely think of him being desperate and obsessed. And he wants to be amazing for her, but he's constantly letting her down, and can't seem to be the kind of man that's expected. He's looking for her weak spots- trying to get her to see him as 'amazing'.
By the way, I'm listening to the live version right now- there's one verse where he sings "We said goodbyeeeee.... We said goodbyeeeeeee...." I don't think he killed her- I think they broke up. |

I think this song was written with the thoughts of those five friends he lost that year... and Justin refers to it as probably the most personal song he's ever written. So, yeah, there's probably a lot behind it that's too deep to even get into. Based on the wording, it seems like there could be something about a girl he let down, but we can't really know. |
