Okay, this may be a stretch, but I think he's talking about lust in general. "I see you out on the dancefloor shaking around. I see you out on an empty beach. I see you walking a one way street. It's the same as always." He's just talking about seeing random people he thinks look interesting at the time. Everyone sees random people at places like the grocery store or mall (or wherever), and they imagine what an encounter with them would be like. Sort of like fantasizing? |

To me, this song is only as Deadsy20 put it, "obvious interpretations". In this song I see two people who are having a sort of "F--- buddy" relationship, and one wants more than the lust. I also see this person being very unhappy by their actions, and realizing that this person does not want anything deeper than sex. |

It does sound like someone of the corporate world of America, who is very unhappy with where they are at in life. It sounds like they try and please those of higher positions, but can't ever earn the respect they put in. "give me low five I can't help myself I'm a low five downsize no one else do you love yourself?" And also, maybe one day this said person did get some attention; now they want more - power, attention, etc etc. "but I want higher still nothing comes to mind" |

| Elliott Smith – Angel in the Snow Lyrics | 16 years ago |

After attending a party where I met a "one-night-only" type of person, I'm convinced that this song is about a temporary connection at a place like a party (or somewhere along those lines). I have two ideas. IDEA ONE: "I'd say you make a perfect Angel in the snow All crushed out on the way you are" When I think of snow angels, I see something that will be messed up soon or the snow will melt and it will disappear. The snow angel is never permanent. This person Elliott sings of, is just someone who was fun and interesting at the time. After one makes a snow angel, they never dwell on it, say, thirty years later, or even days later. After a while, it just evacuates the mind. You never regret it, you just never really have a genuine concern about it later. IDEA TWO: "Better stop before it goes too far Don't you know that I love you? Sometimes I feel like only a cold still life That fell down here to lay beside you" I also believe that Elliott knew this connection was a bad idea, but gave in to his intrigue by this person. I'm also going to say that this person was someone he knew on an every day basis, but never really acted on anything with. I am guessing he cared deeply about them, but something was stopping him (say a current relationship). Just as someone care's about childhood memories (like that of making a snow angel). |
