I think that the Rake's been killed, but they know that they still aren't free to be with eachother because of the Queen and his debt, so accept a death in the river so that they can be together and free as ghosts.
Perhaps the first "But I pulled you and I called you here - ..." is them singing of being there in the river, whereas the second time they sing it, it is in death and that is why they speak in third person; they are no longer those people in the river, but sing as themselves again as ghosts? |

Ok, so I think the Rake's been killed and this is the bittersweet reunion of William and Margaret... The music at the end confused me for a while, but I think they realize they're still not safe and must hurry to the river. |

I'm thinking the music at the beginning sounds like a fight between Will and the Rake... and the children come to help Will defeat their father. The last little bit sounds like the Rake dies. Anyone else hear that? |

The music's changing from wild to calm suggests that Will has some power over the river, and he persuades it to calm long enough to cross it in the end. |

After reading sedition's comment that William is the Rake's dead son and listening to this song again I expected to hear just a hint of Will's voice in the the son's verse but can't say I did. The first couple times I listened to the cd I had thought the children's ghosts had come back and teleported Margaret to the river, but Will being the son that has returned makes more sense. |

Oooh, I like sedition's take on William. Interesting twist. Being "entombed" in the cradle deffinately gives it probablity. And that the Rake's son says he's come back. I only wish I had figured that out for myself before reading this. |

When I heard the little sample itunes gave of this song I got so excited to hear the whole album. I LOVE the drums and guitar! My god, this is a good sounding song.. And I love the dark lyrics. The Rake is my new favorite villain. |

I think electricrenaissance is right. Wow, that definately explains those lines; I had been thinking maybe the baby died, but they didn't sound at all sad. And if they were having sex then I no longer think the baby was born. All the talk of the baby stirring made me think maybe it was. Also, the song before this one talks of them being naked.
Now to figure out if anything ever happened with the baby after this... I don't think so though. Hmm... |
