I suspect that any song interpretation occurs at different levels: literal and metaphorical/allegorical. Part of the reason it is so fun is that the song often takes on a life of its own without regard to the artist's original intent. This song doesn't seem to literally apply to anything except masturbation, but the metaphors used lend themselves to a variety of more expansive interpretations. I just love the song for the musical quality and the metaphors. I care less about the fact that it may relate to masturbation. My favorite two metaphors are: pulling weeds from dusty soil and scratching nails on the chalkboard. I have to admit, however, that I misunderstood the chalkboard lyric. My misinterpretation of it made a lot more sense to me! I thought it said "are they scratching their nails on the chalkboards of DEAF." That lyric made more sense to me from a "futility" standpoint because the following phrase about "seeking attention when everyone in the room has left" suggested futility and desperation. |

I don't want to seem like a pervert or that I have an exceedingly dirty mind, but I think the 'serrated edge' reference is pretty straightforward if you think of sex and a woman's "tool" for getting what she wants. I believe serrated edge may refer to a woman's labia and how they are somewhat wrinked and serrated in appearance (depending on the woman). Moving it back and forth might be an overt reference to the act of sex itself. The fact that it's a "simple machine" that doesn't require force seems to lend support to the interpretation because women rarely have to work too hard to get sexual attention of a male, and once they provide sex to a man, he is quite often at her beck and call. Maybe I just have a dirty mind! The ziploc bag reference loses me a bit and might diminish the legitimacy of my interpretation. Although, I have heard of women who take the male's ejaculate and freeze it so they can conceive a child without his participation at a later date. How's that for a stretch?! |
