Intensely cynical lyrics. By accomplishing achievements for ourselves we inadvertently or consciously end up screwing someone else over. Often the cost of success is to become the person you once despised. No matter how many times we try to do it better this time, the result are inevitably just as bad as the last. The last line turns the finger on the listener. He is trying to live up to an image expected by society, trying to appease judgement from other people. |

Lyrics were by Strummer. Most of the music except guitar was played by Headon (for whatever reason). He definitely wrote the piano intro. Its about the authorities banning outside cultural influence (western music?) and Strummer is fantasizing about the people ignoring the ban and play music anyway. I like the bit about the pilot wailing. Nice way to illustrate that the tools of oppression have a conscience too. I remember hearing this at Glastonbury blaring out of some speakers at a clothes. It sounded awesome. Still does. Anyone hear that annoying phone ringtone around the third verse? Ironic that you can now actually get it AS your ringtone. lol BTW Cut The Crap is the clash selling out...or just being awful. take your pick. |

So the children are basically causing trouble (like the little tikes always do) and harrasing an old lady. The old lady assumes the chickens are a focus for the kids. Eventually one of the children has a fit. possibably epilectic? The gang of kids start accussing the old lady of causing the fit and further being a witch. Tension mounts and eventually the old lady grows tired of the accusations and admits guilt (of which crime it isn't clear) and is promptly lynched and hung by the locals. Including all her family. This song is about the tribal "witch trials" that still go on to this day in remote countries. Obviously europe had the same outlook at some point in the past, but this is a comment on developing country's lingering superstitions. Unfortunately paranoia rules supreme in *some* isolated communities and *occasionally* the mob rules. Every now and again you'll find an article in Fortean Times or the BBC.com news about villages plagued by fear and paranoia over witches. Classes of children will go into convulsions and those accused of "witchcraft" get dragged from their homes by mobs and set on fire in the street. This isn't a fantasy subject. It's a real as Female Genital Mutilation. Personally, it's music like this that convinced me that the Resident are on the ball as they were in their heyday(70-81). This is about bi-polar disorder. One mind is up and heavenly and the other is down and hellish. But it ponders if up can be bad in certain circumstances then perhaps down could conversly be good in others. I think this deals with the battle when taking meds for bi-polar. you take the pills to prevent the crazy swings, but your inner voice is always saying "cmon we don't the meds, we'll have more fun without them". in the short term. It's not actually about finding a man. the guy in the lyrics is a metaphor for the kind of debauched behaviour that awaits when you "go off the meds". hence the beer/tar (read sleazy bar/smokes) references. The devils roof is the heinous heights that can be reached when you lose all self-control. I guess this counts also for addictions...not that i'm saying kristin was/is a drunk. great song too. :) |

this is about getting up and doing something. rather than just spending your life sitting watching t.v. or being stuck in a dead end job etc... like go out and start a band, write a book etc... -Through the whole experience he is still learning ("the farther i go the less i know"), -but he is still constantly excited by the challenges ahead ("the answer is there the answer is there but there is not a fixed position it keeps moving along"). -Inactivity would be to wastes ones life ("if i stop to catch my breath i might catch a piece of death"). -But he's not racing to win nor is he letting anyone else slow him down ("i can't keep your pace if i want to finish this race my fight's not with it it's with the gravity") Especially poignant considering McKaye is still keeping him self busy with bands, studio work and label admin even after Fugazi went into hibernation. Most people would probably just stop at that point. Oh and I really love the intro to this song!! :) |
