This *has to be* inspired by Molières The Misanthrope. No, really. I don't expect many to know it, but it goes sort of like this; Alceste is an outcast of the French aristocracy, hopelessly honest and lacking any tact from it, preferring people to hate him and be honest about it rather than societys expectations of pretending your deepest enemies are your closest friends. Related to 100 Other Lovers? Alceste is in love with the beautiful social butterfly Celimene, a woman keeping close company with many men (I will admit I am embarrassed by your grace And the complete look of boredom upon your face), something he's painfully aware of. She tells him he's her one true love, but everyone else claims she's said the same to them (The words come easily And they sound so lovely I guess it's just as easy if you lie to me.) Their friends keep telling him he's being a hypocrit for loving her despite her open deception due to his stance on honesty, most of them for their own gain, either because they're in love with him or her. (Everybody they got all kinds of advice They want to tell you just how you should live your life. But who exactly am I supposed to believe? Am I supposed to let you walk away from me?) He believes he can change her, show her what she really wants, even after all her secrets are revealed, and she's shown to talk trash about *all* the men she sees, including him.
