"trapped in material plane" I think is referring to the idea that we are souls that have come down and been trapped here I'm the 3rd dimension and this causes some problems for us on planet earth here.

Kind of like that Sting song "we are spirits trapped in the material world"

"I'm forever in existence I'm forever OK"... SA is referring to his belief in eternal life... Like cooky311 was saying, SA refers to eternal life alot in his songs like I'm T&P combo when he raps "if you're not in the future you're not here either". The Continious Life of course is all about eternal life..........

SA's got a cool line

"if you're not in the future you're not here either" this is referring to eternal life.... It's a common theme in 311 songs such as The Continuous Life, or even in Sunset In July when he sings the line "if I'm forever in existence, I'm forever ok"

Nicks verses are pretty random... Generally positive..

SA's on the other hand.... to me, are about the apocalypse which he feels is destined to happen. but, we will live on into the next life

"dust and ash" refers to people being dust and ash (ashes to ashes, dust to dust)...

Also could be referring to the ol' scientific saying that "we are all stardust"

I used to think we was referring to the dust and ash that we turn into when the "comet" hits earth.

This is the case, and it makes a lot more sense when you read them this way, especially with the chord changes in the music

Not a bad interpretation, I think this is sort of a sub meaning of the general philosophical principle

That is, getting over self doubt

Yep.... Definitely.... It's like the buddha said:

"everything that we are is based on our thoughts"

This song is about self doubt, and roadblocks that keep us from reaching the higher plane

I agree with goodfella...

It's definitely about going for your dreams, and that sometimes your own conscious will get in the way and the voices in your head will try to tell you that you can't do it. He's saying don't listen to those voices and don't fear them because its just in your head...."iit's you"

And also they're saying that if you do listen to the doubt within your concious mind, and give up on your dreams, then your mind will flip on you later, and haunt you for giving "up the fight" to go after your dreams.

Like many 311 songs it is about getting through your own mental roadblocks and delusions that hold you back from Being your best-self

311 – Something Out of Nothing Lyrics 13 years ago
Another esoteric 311 song

Something Out of Nothing is a Qabbalistic saying.

And this song makes a lot more sense when you think of it as "Magick" something out of nothing.

I remember seeing a quote made by P-nut on their website message board many years before this song was written in which he said something along the lines of "before you die learn to write music... When you write music youre creating something out of nothing, which is the definition of magick"

"every time you're through the door don't care what they say" --- to me this quote is either referring to a loved one, or referring to the fans showing up at their shows.... Either or....

And they are saying that "the paranormal became normal" meaning they manifested their success/fans (or loved one) through spiritual work.....They created their own reality.

Of course the rest of the song is very much a tribute to Oneness... And being one with the universe

311 – Jackpot Lyrics 13 years ago
This song has some serious occult references in it... "touch of my wand" and "my guardian", feels very Crowleyian. They're basically showing their gratitude for the luck they've had and singing about the work that went into making it to where they are now and fullfilling what they think is their higher purpose in life

The lyrics in this song are pretty mysterious.

311 – How Do You Feel? Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about breaking through your own mental road blocks. It sort of has an occult vibe like many 311 songs. They're singing about their higher purpose in life which is to "rock a show" ....... "that's where I am when the lights goin down". The song is meant to uplift people to fulfill their goals and find their purpose in life. "you can take on the world, it's all in your brain"

Once you've mastered yourself and your doin your thing you feel great and can't "ask for a single thing more"

Great tune

311 – Hostile Apostle Lyrics 16 years ago
Alright,

This is my interpretation.

This song has got some amazing lyrics. SA and Nick are so dead-on sometimes. I do not really think this song is about bands that put out a negative vibe. To me this song is about people who have power in life but practice their use of that power in bad negative ways to exploit people or a situation hence the term "Hostile Apostle". Their power could be anything, job status, money, position within a social circle, CEO's, lawyers, public speakers, spiritual leaders, whatever. .

In this killer tune Nick explains that he cant take part in the "deception" and is suspicious of the "motives on your mission". Clearly Nick and possibly the band had a run in with someone or some group that were dishonest and perhaps had manipulated a group of weaker individuals to follow them in whatever they were doing... and in so they were taking advantage of their followers like Con-men.

I think living in hollywood and working in the entertainment business people are probably always trying to con 311 and take advantage of them.. So they probably have experience in dealing with scum bags that might try to manipulate weaker people by promising them the world or some truth.

This sort of theme is all over the album From Chaos..

So Nick sings and raps about how when you are down and you're weak, you might want to follow people to help you out of the slump. But they really don't have the answers or power that you need to get out of your slump. They're really just phonies

While Nick sings about the "Hostile Apostle" and how they are lost negative people who take advantage of others.. SA is rapping about how to be the opposite, be postive, love life, typical 311 message.

I recently got the chance to meet someone an author who is one of the leaders of new pop-culture scene and lifestyle. The guy was a total fake. I did some business with him but quickly learned to stay away. Total let down. This song came on my ipod on random after I parted ways.. Really opened my eyes. The dude was a hostile Apostle.
