The way I immediately interpreted this video and song was a heart-aching view of addiction. Throughout the video, Rihanna's character appears disheveled, saddened, and cold, even though she is in a hot bath. This is characteristic of an individual going through drug withdrawals and detox off of a substance. While detoxing off of a drug, hot baths and steams are particularly useful at removing toxins. It appears she is struggling with coming off of a drug / battling her addiction. Meanwhile, her lover has painstakingly stuck by her side and is "staying", sticking it through, most likely because he is struggling with his own addiction - an addiction to her/their relationship. He wants to stick it through to see her on the other side because he needs her. The couple both struggling with something to fill in their emptiness - "'cause I need this hole gone". Beautiful. Personally hits home with me and my own past experiences. Strikingly familiar. |

| I definitely agree with you. The battle of addiction is what I immediately interpreted this song to be about - especially after seeing the music video (cold-sweats, in a hot bath - characteristic of detoxing). Being a recovering addict, the striking similarities between addiction (for her, to drugs.. for him, to her) were extremely notable. | |

When I first listened to this song, I thought he was saying ".. a sky for shooting horses under", by which I was sure meant shooting heroin. But shoeing? The only definition or meaning I can really give to shoeing is beating, or kicking someone with one's shoes. And breakouttheshotguns is right, "khat" is an amphetamine-like stimulant used primarily in middle-eastern countries, whereas "cot" would refer to Oxycontin, a semi-synthetic opioid (narcotic) that is prescribed for chronic pain in the U.S but is used for recreational purposes by some. |

If the song is talking about marijuana at the part.. Sing it soft. Make it slow. Apples parachute the boys back down. Fill it up. Overflow. A new, improved modern way to feel. ..which I think it is, then I think "apples parachute the boys back down" referring to it. And "fill it up. Overflow." is referring to filling up your bowl, and someone putting too much in (overflow.) "A new, improved modern way to feel." hence, being high. |
