Of the thousands of songs in my collection, this ranks among the most haunting. To me, it represents something that can never be taken away. Despite being abused, lost and pale, I think she's cheerishing something in her center that holds everything together. For me, it represents something private that she will always protect. It's just downright frightening to consider what one might have experienced to write something like this. |

So, I'm 30, and Gwen was about 30 when she wrote this. 24-28 is a funny age. It's the nesting age, when you want to settle down. Around this time folks have to make a decision about their first real long term relationship. I started to change around 27. I no longer loved the one I was with. I had matured into someone else and realized, slowly, that we had to end. Maybe if we had children it would have been different. The regret of what could have been, of time invested, of not having kids, that still hurts. What we had just could not go on though. From this guys perspective, I empathize when I hear this song. It fills me with regret and reminiscing. It's a simple song about complicated things. |
