Bat for Lashes – Glass Lyrics 16 years ago
I just found this and it was too lovely not to share:

"'Every time I get close, his heart vibrates, gets stronger and we get blinded by it,' Khan says. 'So I try and make him a cloak made of rainbow colors to refract the light so we can be close, but every time we do, the suns in our chests set fire to everything. In the end, the two suns burning so hotly creates a third thing, a perfect white diamond that flings into space and we become two planets constantly orbiting, basking in each others light, always separated, but there is that diamond that remains.' This cosmic talk is all metaphor of course, cloaking the timeless themes that dominate Two Suns, as well as Khan’s experience making it: journey, love, struggle and resolution."

Bat for Lashes – Horse and I Lyrics 16 years ago
As odd as it might be, this song makes me think of so many different things: Equus (the play by Peter Shaffer), that old animated film about the boy who makes a snowman that comes to life and flies him to the north pole, The Master and Margarita (mostly when Margarita is being taken to Satan's Ball), and of course, Joan of Arc.

I think all that just goes to show Natasha knows how to tap into really strong mythic, iconic imagery but still make it her own. How many other people can get away with singing about being the chosen one these days? ;)

Bat for Lashes – The Wizard Lyrics 16 years ago
To go along with sparrowonthewing, I watched an interview where Natasha sort of explained that it's about the sort of sexual tension and desire between two people and how the wizard is the force that comes and spurs (would-be) lovers into action. I really love the way she ran with that idea, the imagery is so beautiful... I like the sort of ritualistic idea of drinking his blood, becoming a follower of desire. Natasha's head must be such an interesting place, no? :]

Bat for Lashes – What's A Girl To Do Lyrics 16 years ago
I was hoping I hadn't just imagined the Shangri-Las connection :] I sort of got it from the song, but ten times more from the video; the bikes in lieu of a motorcycle and then the car wreck, and my brain went "Wait, Leader of the Pack?" Interesting =)

Bat for Lashes – Tahiti Lyrics 16 years ago
Parts of the song (namely the chorus) made me think it was about slavery, but I don't think that's so... (After all, Tahiti from what I can tell never really had much slavery, all the Europeans just went there to holiday and spread their diseases. But I'm sure it's not that literal anyway.)

I feel it's sort of being sent off on this anticipatory journey, sort of like being chosen to lead the way and travel to a new place, only to have hopes crushed. That sort of fits with some of the other songs?

Bat for Lashes – Prescilla Lyrics 16 years ago
I just watched an interview (wish I could find it now) where Natasha was explaining a few song meanings including The Wizard and Prescilla, and she mentioned a theme that's right in line with the new album; essentially, two sides of the same woman wanting two different things, just the inner conflict of being drawn in two directions. So it sounds to me like Prescilla was setting the stage for Pearl :]

But I totally made the Priscilla, Queen of the Desert connection as well!
