Elliott Smith – I Can't Answer You Anymore Lyrics 16 years ago
A few months back i posted for "Talking to Mary" about how that song makes me think of Mary in the bible and having faith and how this song was sort of like the "other side" of that- like about doubting. I still feel that way when i hear "Talking to Mary" but i don't think of doubting anymore for this song, although i really like it. Maybe it is about doing your own thing and how space in relationships can be for the best sometimes, whether it is a temporary space to sort of clear your mind and get some point of view or a more permanent space in the case of a toxic relationship.

Elliott Smith – Talking to Mary Lyrics 16 years ago
The closest comment posted so far of what this song makes me think of is from kimthestrange. This song makes me think of Mother Mary. I can appreciate the connection with "Pretty Mary K" due to the shared lyric between the songs mentioned previously but I do not think the songs are about the same thing or person. I have had a strong faith for most all of my life, although there have been times when I have really questioned it, ultimately for the better I believe. That being the case, the first two verses are so clear to me as being about religion and how God knows what is going on in your life, including what is in your head. The third verse makes me think of forgiveness, and how God is still there for you and wants to help guide you, no matter what kind of mess you have made. The fourth verse makes me think of how money is not the answer to faith, but instead actually listening, praying, and acting accordingly. The chorus of "One day she'll go, I told you so" is about when you die and how if you rejected her while you were alive, you cannot go back and do things differently (like Mary is saying "I told you so"). The bridge is the most interesting part to me and also the hardest to make sense of. Like the chorus, I think the point of view if from Mary's again- "I'll just keep quiet..." is Mary knowing that you are rejecting her, or at the very least, trying to do things your own way, while still trying to retain some sort of relationship with her. The "..that I don't love you as much as I do" part again is her expressing her pain from the distance you have made in your relationship with her.
Another song of his that is about faith to me is "I can't answer you anymore." That song is more about doubting to me, while "Talking to Mary" is more about believing.
And I just want to make clear that the part I wrote about how I think questioning my faith has been for the better is not congruent to altogether rejecting my faith. I just want to be the best social worker I can be.
