I've heard one of the recordings where he says explicitely it's about a bird dreaming about Olympus Mons. But... kshe95's interpretation is incredible. If this song isn't about that, it SHOULD be. Also, this is, bar none, my favorite song by the Pixies. It's like my eyes glaze over and I'm in another dimension when I listen to this, absolutely incredible. |

| I'll echo what's been said, I think this song could definitely be generally about loneliness. Too busy to have friends, a relationship would complicate things. What should be a fairly positive thing, masturbation, is actually quite depressing in light of how lonely she is. In fact, it only serves to bring her loneliness into relief, to make it all that more evident. I think a lot of people have been there, and even if not the exact same situation, Palmer's incredible songwriting makes the emotions so accessible and visceral... I think this would be a more popular song of theirs if more people gave it a chance. | |

I seem to have taken away something very different from this song. From the first listen, this song seemed to be about a manipulative woman, who fishes around for "lonely" guys, uses her genuine problems to make them feel sorry for her, uses them, and tosses them when she's done. This could very well be because I had just been dumped by somebody exactly like that when I first heard this song, though I didn't realize what her "game" had been until it was all over. If anything, I think this song highlights how art can, and should, mean different things to different people. I've had a hunch, given that several of their songs could have several interpretations, and they rarely seem to provide definitive meanings, that this has been the Dresden Dolls' intent with many, if not most, of their songs. |
