Dream Theater – On the Backs of Angels Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok, It is about Atlas Shrugged. Standing "On the Back of Angels" means to be standing on the backs of the highest possible, the men and women who produce. The songs is wonderful but the line "Selfless are the righteous" doesn't fit. That line contradicts the entire philosophy DT puts forth in their entire discography, unless they are intending it to be a sarcastic line. Thoughts?

Dream Theater – Beneath The Surface Lyrics 14 years ago
I cried too. I agree that it is definitely a general relationship type song that we can all relate too. For me, it brings back the feelings of pain and hurt when I really cared about a friend who simply didn't return that same care and understanding, and one day, I made the conscious decision to stop caring. Then i heard this song... yeah. This was the first song I listened to twice on the album. Very excellent album indeed.

There is nothing in this song that suggests a relationship. Einstein suggests a relationship ending more than space travel? I don't believe there is anything simple about this song.

HEY! I love this song! haha. It has a special 1984 type theme which I can't get enough of. We watch you breathing through the camera's eye. This song is about 1984. I'm sure of it. And I agree, It is one of the best and most unique bruce songs ever.

Iron Maiden – Starblind Lyrics 15 years ago
"The Preacher loses face with Christ, religion's cruel device is gone" That is referring to a preacher who loses their faith, obviously. THe hold they had on followers drops, thus the "cruel device is gone." "Empty flesh and hollow bones make pacts of love but die alone" I believe this to mean that many people who don't know who they are themselves, thus they are empty flesh and hollow bones. They have no substance because they have refused to live for themselves, but instead for someone or something else, such as God. They make pacts of love- marriage, whatever- but die alone. When one doesn't live for themself, they cannot be happy, thus their pacts of love fail and they die alone. "The crucible of pain will forge, the blanks of sin begin again" The stuggle of pain causes us to "sin" again...it's a cycle? and then the last lovable, Randian line, "You are free to choose a life to live, or one that's left to lose!" oh so sweet! This is my favorite song on the album....but they are all fantastic. Up the Irons!

Absolutely Stunning composition from Iron Maiden. THis song proves that they still have whatever it is that motivates them to create great music and lyrics...which I think that motivation is impressing the fans...Well this sure as hell impressed me. I have read, and re-read, the lyrics to song and I'm still very unsure. But I love what I understand.

WTF WAS I THINKING CHAINS FOR?????? Change....now that I think about it...This song is a prediction about Obama. But hey...my last message was an attempt to make sense of lyrics that I made up...haha. Oh well. My bad. THe point about the expansion of government still stands with the altered lyric.

ip410....f$#k off! This song is of the best...It's message parallels the message of the other songs on PoM...and as far as I'm concerned..IM can't write a bad song...or at least haven't yet!

I've noticed how educated IM and metal fans are compared to fans of almost any other genre...just thought I'd put that out there. Too many people make misconceptions about metal and IM...when I just wish they'd play it on the radio instead of this Metallica everything in E Minor bullshit!

Iron Maiden – Look For The Truth Lyrics 16 years ago
Look for the truth...look for the truth within yourself; within your soul and your mind. Find your true self. Look for the truth within your government. look for the truth wherever you go...But always givet he truth as well as always looking for it. We've seen "truth" be a theme of several Iron Maiden songs, now haven't we? Maybe they are trying to tell us something. I just wish Bruce would run for PM of Britain already...and then President of America (I know, i know...he can't run for President) But it would be awesome and he'd be excellent!

This is a song that gets me pumped up. I could listen to it over and over...I love all the Blaze stuff, but I hate Blaze singing live. Yes...I even like "The Angel and the Gamble"...Even though it IS the only Iron Maiden pop song. haha. It still gets me pumped up! As for the meaning of this song...

Iron Maiden – Sign of the Cross Lyrics 16 years ago
I very much would agree with the Steve cheating on his wife theory...and It wouldn't surprise me, based on the evidence. I've noticed incredible emotion within the lyrics of these songs and that would explain a lot of it. This song is best RiR with Bruce wailing, by the way. But...I still love Bayley's recorded voice..but let's face it. Blaze can't sing live while Bruce sings exceptionally live.

Iron Maiden – Hallowed Be Thy Name Lyrics 16 years ago
I think, and maybe un-intentionally, there is some Crucible/ Salem Witch Trial theme in here...I wouldn't put it past Maiden to make it extrememly unobvious. The song is called Hallowed Be Thy Name for and obvious reason, though. Hallowed is synonymous somewhat and mostly in colonial times with the word "honor" So, the character of this song wants his name to be honored. He wants to be remembered...as we all do.

Rainbow Demon has it right, i think. After you mentioned that, i can't listen to this song without shivering each time at the correlation between Chariot of the Gods and other Von Daniken works and this song.

"To find our minds were spinning,
souls entwined in a spiral dance"

This means we found that our minds are far more interwined than we ever knew, with both and Alien nation each other, maybe even a GOD reference here in regard to the Universe being God. The 'spiral dance' refers to the shape of galaxies, which are often spiral shaped. There are potentially so many different life forms out there in one galaxy that all these different 'souls' are inwtined within this spiral dance. Quite beautiful, really.

"The ancient ways have found us, again,
to give us one last chance"

This is to say that the Aliens in Van Daniken's theories have or will come back to help us one last time to further our knowledge and species. Perhaps he is prophisizing here?

"Living in this place, staring into space we find
We might share the corners of our lives"

Living on Earth, when we stare into space we think about he possiblility that life did not originate on Earth, thus, we would share a bit of our DNA composition with an Alien race somewhere, otherwise known as, the corners of our lives.

"Infinity runs deep, eternety that we can't keep
Melting through the frozen wastes of time"

Infinity obviously runs on forever, and forever is deeper than comprehension goes. Eternity that we can't keep refers to the realization that one day (be it tomorrow or billions of years from now) humans will no longer exist. and our memory will melt into the frozen wastes of time, 'cos when the universe crunchs, time will not cease to exist.

"Purple gold and blue,
Living colours every hue," This refers to stars, as stated earlier.

"Flowers in the garden of the gods" Stated earlier, stars are flowers in the universe (garden)

"No one can ever know
If you never saw them grow
This darkness, is really full of light" The darkness that appears to be in the universe is really very much a bright place, due to the flowers in the gardens of the gods.

I could go on and on, but i'm tired and may do it later instead.

i agree with masqued death. Excellent point there! I also think, as i have stated before, that i think iron maiden dosn't specify in their songs what it's about for a reason. That reason being they want the listener/reader to interpret the lyrics as they will without another influence. This, and many other IM songs, can be realted to damn near anything if we try hard enough, and it would make sense too!

I think they took a different approach to this song and that it may be about the founding fathers of America being sickened by what is presnet nowadays. (IM May not haven't written this song about America due to them all being English, but it's a possibility. You can certainly apply it to Modern Day America) The terrorists with unjust causes are those who are trying to take the freedom.

"the land of the free has been written in chains" could refer to the many alterations to the government since the founding fathers headed it. The government has expanded, which restricts the influence of nature on economy and whatnot. Chains could refer to the expansion of government??? I'm not sure, but i spend hours philosphizing over this stuff. Iron Maiden certainly do give people great life philosophies, such as from Hallowed be Thy Name, "Life down here is just a strange illusion" What an excellent concept of reality! From that you can stem Erik von Daniken's theory from Chariot of the Gods and all kinds of stuff. It's really quite wonderful.

Iron Maiden – The Longest Day Lyrics 16 years ago
I absolutley love the line "Overlord, your master, not your God"

This is because the D-Day invasion was called Operation Overlord and was highly anticipated. So in saying "Overlord, your master, not you God" Maiden was saying that the operation meant so much to the war and individual effort meant so much that people became this operation's slaves, but reminds us that God played no part in this. Excellent song. Watch the making AMOLAD for extreme song meanings!

Iron Maiden – Rainmaker Lyrics 16 years ago
Since most IM songs are ambiguous and completely up to anyone's interpretation, i think every has been right. Have any of you ever noticed that once you live and breath a Maiden song for awhile and then you move to another one, something you see, read, hear or dream about jogs a new perspective and meaning to the song. It happens to me all the time.

I think this song is associated with politicans, the desert being the barren scene of lies they spread about while campaigning. "and i know of the pain, that you feel the same as me. And i dream of hte rain as it falls upon the leaves" This message is relayed over and over again by politicians who claim to empathize with the citizens. They talk about the dream of a better nation and thatthey feelt he same way. and the next line, "and the cracks in the ground, like the cracks are in our lives. They are sealed and are now washed away." The cracks in the ground are constantly closing and reopening, due to tectonic plate movement. This could mean that old problems will never again resurface as long as we continue evolving socially. The cracks seal and never reopen, therefore the fallacies of humans will be sealed and never reopen, 'cos they've been washed away by the rain. Then the chorus is so beautiful. I picture Bruce running for office someday, (too bad it can't be in the U.S. Dammit) singing this song as a campaign slogan. He'd f-ing win too!!! I'd become a British citizen just to vote for him!!! Extremely wonderful song, one of their best, of course, they are all one of their best. Bruce's voice is absolutely amazing in this song and the guitar throughout is so catchy and just has that pupmed feeling. I Love This Song.

Iron Maiden – Judgement Of Heaven Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah! Who the FUCK has the nobility and mind and.....BALLS to call any Iron Maiden song a Lame Lyriced song??? If they wrote a song that was a couplet (2 lines for the stupid people) I guarantee any true Maiden Fan would be able to write paragraph after paragraph on the meaning of those two lines. They would be able to relate it several different texts, probably a William Blake poem somewhere in there too, and why not some new controversial religious aspect?? I'm just saying that most Maiden songs are ambiguous and completely up to the listener/reader to interpret. They are genius writers, all of them.

Anyway, i think this song portrays the best message regarding suicide that i have ever heard or read. They don't go into some fancy way of saying it, but come out and quite bluntly say "But that's the easy way, that's the selfish way, the hardest part is to get on with your life!" Truer words have never been spoken, my friends. I have always felt this way about suicide. We don't come to Earth to kill ourselves! We come to Earth to become educated, and if that means emotional trauma, then so be it.

Iron Maiden – Gates Of Tomorrow Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is very much about celebrities as well. "Suffering evil when you pay the price of fame" refers to celebrities who are metaphorically being sucked into "evil" lifestyles. and "There is no God to save you, if you don't save yourself" refers to how they don't try hard enough to get out of their situation. This line is also true about relgion though. People need to understand that simiply being religious and going to chruch on sundays isn't enough spirituality for what thier intentions are. No God truly can save you if you first don't save yourself. Its like getting over an addiction, getting over denial is when you frist make progress. You must admit to yourself your 'sins' and map out how to change your life before you can make real progress. I listen to this song mostly just to here Bruce sing it with such truth and strength and, there is a quality of personal emotion in it too.

I think that "trinity reformed" refers to all above mentioned ideas (Test site, three different types, re-creating God, etc...) but i also think it may refer to reforming the Holy Trinity. This is because when the bombs go off, many people would do some kind of praying and many people pray to the holy trinity. Well, radiation from the nuclear blast causes mutation. The song might be referring to the way the nuclear bombs have and will continue to mutate our various religions, testing the most articualted beliefs to their limits. Just a theory. I agree, heavy metal, at least Iron Maiden, is in no way satanic, or in that matter, against any religion. They seem to bash them all just the same....that is, with Nicko's approval.
