In the beginning, the man is justifying his journey that has hurt his lover. He is trying to unify them by saying that “we” all go through the same trials and sufferings in life, perhaps pleading with her to understand why he did what he did, why he left her. He left a great love that he learned much from and the flames in the forest were glorying both the man and the woman in the relationship because of what they accomplished together (These flames do not seem to be aware that he has actually left her). She knows that he kept her love married deep in his heart despite the unrevealed reasons why he left her. He continued to love her because the reason he left her was not particularly her fault, but life’s fault: there were personal reasons he had to leave her. Perhaps he needed to leave to fulfill and find himself. The tone is sadly liberating. He is confessing to his old love that she couldn’t have stopped him, and she will accept what has happened, with time. Although he continues to love her very much, he needed to leave her because she was holding him back from living his life. She is not destroyed by the end of this love though, because, like the flames in the forest, she realizes the greatness of what they had and all that they accomplished together. |
