You've got it people. Just saw Elbow at Wembley and Guy explained that this is about the concept that if your life flashes before your eyes when you die, then effectively we can choose our final thoughts now. This is about a time he spent in a room with a girl and he wanted to record it - as his final thought. He's happy to die so long as that time, in that room, with her is his final thought 'switching off with you'. What a lovely tribute to pay to that girl - whoever she is. |

I lost 6 of the best friends anyone could wish for through excessive drinking. I turned into that 'terrible totem' too many times. It's easy to feel sorry for oneself, but not often easy to see it from a friends perspective. The friends who's hearts break as they watch yet another booze induced transformation of character. Spare a thought for your best friend who 'pulls at the reigns' repeatedly. Although i never felt all that beautiful, i have often since felt like a quivering, chivalrous shambles of a man. This is such a tragically beautiful song. To Guy Garvey, i applaud you. To my friends, I am sorry. |

| Elbow – Friend of Ours Lyrics

I've just seen Elbow play this live at Wembley Arena to close the gig. A beautifully honest tribute to a friend. Guy Garvey's lyrics are amongst the best in my opinion. Initially I was slightly disappointed to be seeing Elbow at such a large venue but at times it felt as intimate as any gig I've ever been to. I think this is testament to what a great band they are. I shall never perform the 'gentle shoulder charge' goodbye in the same way again. Beautiful song written by a fantastic lyricist, a seemingly lovely bloke and obviously a great friend. Thank you Mr Garvey and Elbow.
