i think this song is about Elliott's mom and step dad. his step dad is a horrible person who has changed Elliott's mom into a sad and neglectful individual. but Elliott will always love his mom, no matter how unrecognizable she has become, because she is his mom. |

you have a very lovely interpretation here grottola! there's one thing i would like to add about these lines here:

That's the only way it can be
i think this means reincarnation. he's been through this life and searched for the answers, and hasn't found them in love or anywhere else, for that matter. after death there is only another life, and again and again in a cycle. he has referred to reincarnation many times before, in songs such as "arc of time" and "i believe in symmetry". isn't he a genius? he songs are so emotional and full of wisdom . . .

this is such an emotional and life-encompassing song. the third verse is my favorite; conor is drifting randomly because he doesn't understand where this life is leading and what the whole purpose is. ultimately, however, i think he understands best; people are drinking cosmopolitans and studying science and frivolously wasting their time while conor contemplates something much more - the meaning of all these actions |

the first two lines are about the hopelessness of mankind, our common fate, how death is the end for us all.
"drink liquid clocks until I see god" : how time slips through his fingers, and suddenly, the end is there
the next line is about crystal meth, clearly, his addiction (like, you hear the ragged breathing?)

wow . . . i wish i had such interpretive intelligence as all the rest of you . . . this is mine: this girl had an argument with him and then she drove away to this drunk man she has an affair with and then they drove off together and she crashed the car and they both died. and then elliott is the crushed moth, because it is his soul that is crushed, but nobody really cares because his ex, the lightbulb, doesnt love him very much. yeah. but now i know differently, ahaha. great song, though. |
