this is my favorite metallica song. for the longest time it was battery- and that will always be my fave thrash song, but from a broader palette (which is why i love metallica since there's so many styles of theirs to fall in to be it R&B, speed, nu-metal, or just classic metal) this song rules all.
the fact that there are so many interpretations to this song, all of which are correct as they're all based on our raw emotional responses to the song, is a testament to it's pure viscerality. if every listener is able to imagine completely new scenarios with a song, then that proves how truly awesome it is. definitely the most underrated- i know the first time i listened to load i didn't even make it past the opening crescendo of scratches. along with bleeding me, fixxxer, and low man's lyric, the outlaw torn is now among my tops because of how far it blows me away with its passion and power.
and every time i play these four songs for friends or even girlfriends of mine, they're always quick to agree with me: that metallica is one of the greatest bands of all time, and definitely worth a second or third (or in my case, according to my itunes library, 213th) listening... |

I believe, and stop me when I roll off the rails here… but it tells about how we are the ‘toys at the hands of another,’ the playthings of a higher power. The voodoo dolls of a deity, whatever that may be for you. And the pins that it sticks in us are for the sins we commit. We are caught in a perpetual spiral of the creation of our own damnation. At least in our lifetime. The more we go awry, the more our lives become hell. There is a proposal in the chorus, ‘can we strip away so we may start again?’ And the answer of course, is yes. We can be fixed by the great Fixxxer. Three X’s for the stone, a symbolic focal point of the ritual that brings us closer to Him. The ritual due when you have nowhere else to turn to while floundering in the obscurity of your darkest hour. But it’s the interlude of the song where the most beauty lies. ‘To renew our faith which way can. To fall in love with life again.’ You’d have to fall out of love, you’d have to know the despair that comes from hating your own life in order to grasp the beauty of the image of falling in love with life once again. This song is among the most visceral in hard rock. |

i feel this song is about steroids. even thought none of the band ever did steroids, the intro sounds exactly like 1) the injection of a needle, 2) the elixir taking effect, 3) feeling the effects, power, and roid rage, and then the lyrics feed right into they manner in which harmful substances changes the psyche and ruins a life. |

this song just floored me when i first heard it, and now it's still my fave song off the new album. it may not be as catchy as my other loved songs of theirs, (ie: battery, creeping death, fuel, and all nightmare long) but it's one of two that actually speaks to me on a deeper plane (the other being fixxxer.) it's just beautiful. |
