I believe TheMinstelBoy is mostly correct, but the deeper meaning of the song is to tie the temptation of sex at first, then war(or killing) with sin or 'The Devil's Arcade'. As the song continues it ties Love with the recovery of a wounded veteran and his return to the world he left went he went away to the war, the real 'Devil's Arcade'. |

What a song!
From the very first time I heard it and everytime since I have been amazed how overlooked this incredibly powerful song has been. Maybe too depressing for many peoples taste, but it instantly touched me deeply.
It simply tells that gut wrenching story of seeing a past love, who didn't get close to what she wanted from life or what you would have wished for her. Is there any other artist who could have told this story? |

Although it only one of so many songs of Bruce's that you can envision the charactors, what makes it so powerful is that it is even easier to identify with this song. It harkens back to a special time in many peoples lives when you or a friend had their first car and the freedom that it provided. Didn't everybody go through a stage of staying out late, driving around, and looking for romance. The joys and heartbreaks of those days will always be with us, and Bruce will be there to make sure of that. |
