I always thought it was speaking from a ghost's point of view. Too tired to be afraid of death, but the life cannot let go. Just need a little more time. Quite possibly it could also be interpreted as someone on life support being disconnected... |

MH, Great analysis! Lots of thinking went into that... I always thought it was sung from the perspective of someone who loved her once, long ago. He is remembering back on this lively and lovely girl he once loved. She had the pick of boys & the one she chose wasn't him, but she made her choice. Now she's settled into a marriage and a child with her chosen mate. It isn't the perfect life she dreamed it would be. There are lies and skeletons. Its the talk of the town. Her peers snicker about it. They stick the knife in, making jabs... There is an implication that she had turned into something other than the Honey she used to be. Its possibly made her old, hard-used, jaded, hardened or bitter... Something no longer attractive. But she finds A Way to get by. She is strong & gets through it for Family Honour. To keep up appearances. But the singer looks at her now as if to say, "You were so much more. You should have chosen me. You might have had a better life, but this was your choice." Finally, he says "Thats fine" as he walks Away. |
