Bear's Den – Isaac Lyrics 11 years ago
This is definitely the story of Abraham and Isaac from the Bible.

Isaac are you listening
I watched it from afar
I watched as the clouds began to part

[ The lyric "I watched it from afar" tells us that it is neither Isaac, nor his father who is singing, but rather someone witnessing from afar]

Issac can you see my now
I've known you all my life
And I worship the ground you walk upon

[ The lyric "I've known you all my life" tells us that the singer is either the same age as Isaac, or younger. It could be a younger sibling, or a friend/admirer ]

Isaac will you never learn
That a father's love must be earned
Or your mother need not learn
How to love you

[ He is telling Isaac that he has to do this to earn his father's love, but his mother never needs to "learn" how to love him, she just does. ]

alt-J – Breezeblocks Lyrics 12 years ago
The music video is about how he comes home, he finds his wife tied up and gagged under a table.. he goes to save her and the "mistress" comes behind him with a knife. They wrestle around, she drops knife, but then they fall into kitchen. She throws bottle, he gets cinder block and they fight. She goes into bathroom, he chases her and smacks her with cinderblock. Turns on water then drowns her. How do I know the girl that was tied is his wife? It shows her wedding ring when they show her tied hands, then pans to the dead girl's left hand which has no wedding ring.

Lost In The Trees – This Dead Bird Is Beautiful Lyrics 13 years ago
The dead bird is his mother and the "you" he's singing to is his father. I'm guessing the father was abusive to the mother... Could have been what caused her death?
Some notable lines I love : "because she breathed I breathed"... He is alive because she gave birth to him...
"I'll always have her eyes" reminds me of Harry Potter having his mother's eyes... beautiful song.

Bat for Lashes – Moon and Moon Lyrics 16 years ago
"Lover, when you don't lay with me
I'm a huntress for a husband lost at sea"

When her lover doesn't come home or "sleep" with her, she becomes worried, anxious, and wants to find him.
This also implies that he may be having an affair (not "laying" with her, or having sex with her anymore) Or at least she thinks he is.

"If I had you here
Braid our hair together
I'd be boy and you'd be girl
Beautiful"

If her lover were there, she thinks they would be having fun like braiding each other's hair. Pretending she was the boy and he was the girl... sort of playful innocence. That she sees, is beautiful.

"Calling moon and moon
Shoot that big bad hand
It'll drag me to your door
And I won't see you no more"

I feel like the "big bad hand" is a symbolism for her feelings of doubt, loneliness, and unhappiness. Those feelings will lead her towards leaving him, but she doesn't want to leave him. She wants to "shoot" those negative feelings down, or else it will unwillingly lead her to leaving his "door".

"When this wild world
Is a big bad hand
Pushing on my back
Do you understand?"

The big bad hand again is her feelings of negativity, which is pushing on her back each time her lover doesn't come home...

"When I get home
From being in the jungle
Where's my bear to lick me clean?
Feed my soul milk and honey"

She is wondering where her lover is. He is supposed to be there to take care of her, love, and nourish her. But again, he is nowhere to be found.

"Calling moon and moon
Shoot that big bad hand
It'll drag me to your door
And I won't see you no more

I won't see you no more"

If this continues, the feelings of loneliness will be too much to bear and it will lead her to leave him, thus she won't see him anymore.

This song is so beautiful and melancholy. You can really feel her loneliness and pain. She really loves this guy, but he continues to disappoint her. She really doesn't want to leave him, and will shoot her negative feelings down, but if this continues, then she really will leave him.

Iron & Wine – Fever Dream Lyrics 16 years ago
After reading all the interpretations, I listened to the song again and heard it in a totally new light. At first I thought he was singing about his love for her and how "sure" it was and how he desperately wanted it, but now I see that I was wrong. It's a lot deeper than that. The melody is surrounded with a twinge of sadness and it always made me contemplative and sad when I listened to it. I didn't know why until I had this interpretation:

Some days her shape in the doorway
Will speak to me
A birds wing on the window

- Some days when he sees her silhouette in the doorway he feels like he is seeing a bird outside, very close to his window, close enough to touch it with it's wing. I think this symbolizes the anticipation you feel when you want to touch a bird, but it could fly away at anytime. He is saying that sometimes, although she is staying near, he feels she could or wants to leave him at any moment.

Sometimes Ill hear when shes sleeping
Her fever dream
A language on her face

-When you sleep you are most vulnerable and all your true emotions come out. Her fevered dream means that she is not at peace, something in her life is causing her distress and the singer can read the pained expressions as if she were saying to him that she's unhappy.

I want your flowers like babies want Gods love

- I think because there is a woman singing with him, these are her words. Usually girls want flowers from guys because it means the guy likes them. So lets symbolize flowers with the singer's love. As people speculated before, babies need God's love, but it is not in their basic wants. She is saying that she needs his love, but doesn't necessarily want it.

Or maybe as sure as tomorrow will come

-This is an ironic line because no one is sure that tomorrow will come. People want the next day to come, they desperately need it to come, but it is beyond their control. She wants to try to love him, but is uncertain if she can.

Some days, like rain on the doorstep
Shell cover me
With grace in all she offers

-It seems like to me, the singer knows that she doesn't love him but recognizes that she does show him some affection. The doorstep is part of the house, but it is not inside. She does not let herself fully "in" the relationship, but sometimes her affection will be there like hearing the sound of rain on the doorstep.

Sometimes I'd like just to ask her
What honest words
She cant afford to say, like

I want your flowers like babies want Gods love
Or maybe as sure as tomorrow will come

-It's comforting that she shows him some affection but it's not enough.
He wants to ask her what she's hiding, if she is happy and wants to stay. She can't afford to say that she is unhappy and doesn't want to be in the relationship because it will hurt him, or because she still "needs" his love.

Basically in a nutshell it's about a relationship where the guy kind of gets the feeling that it's one sided. He loves her, but he feels like she is putting up a front and can leave at any second. We also get the side of the woman where she is in a dilemma. For some reason she can't leave, and her uncertainty leads her to have fever dreams. Well all I can say is if the chorus applied to me, I would be having fever dreams too!
