| Drivin' N' Cryin' – Straight to Hell Lyrics

Damn, "Slade", summed this up perfectly. Another song by DnC in a classic Country & Western style which, today, would be called "alt-country". Go figure. These guys know how to put a song together. I can't recommend their back albums highly enough. The Jayhawks, Wilco and the rest of their ilk owe as much to Drivn' N' Cryin' as they do REM. The fact they equally balanced their country influence with those of Aerosmith, Zeppelin and the Stones makes their music a more exciting and satisfactory listen than any of those bands. |

Great song by DnC. These guys influenced the Black Crowes back in the day and their legacy can be heard still today in the Kings of Leon. This song is a big reason why. The lyrics evoke such powerful imagery and the music itself is so dramatic and dynamically performed. This is excellent, overlooked music. |

| Drivin' N' Cryin' – Check Your Tears at the Door Lyrics

This song is fantastic. The lyrics are tear-jerking, country & western gospel in the oldest of fashions. The music is perfectly orchestrated. A mix of Dylan-goes-Electric and Hank Williams. The organ is lush and the steel guitar weeps and cries throughout. Appropriate for a classic "death" song. Besides that, I always thought the lyric was, "my father's father's Pa". Not, "mom". In any case, this song is one of many by a great, unheralded band. Dylan, Zeppelin, Hank, John Denver and Black Sabbath come together as influences in their music. A worthy investment of time and effort to check out. |

| Guns N' Roses – Black Leather Lyrics

|
This is a song about a dominatrix pure and simple. "Black leather" refers to the whips, outfits and restraint devices used by such people. Steve Jones has said as much on several occasions. "Crack, crack, I'm feeling so sore, I never should have asked for black leather". Jones would order "Black leather" from his favorite escort service, later regret his choice, then come back for more days or weeks later. Great riff for sure and I find the lyrics humorous. |

Amazing cover. Iggy loved this version by the way. Duff sounds great. When it came to punk he was GNR's go-to-guy. Being from Seattle and having played for punk legends the Fastbacks he was a secret weapon in GNR's arsenal. |

This is such a great song. The music is fantastic. I love Robert Sweet's opening drum fill. The lyrics represent a side of Christianity that has been lost over the years. They are not "preaching" in this song, nor are they offering judgment on anyone or anything. It's a celebration of the freedom that God has given everyone to believe in, or deny, his/her existence. They capture the joy that can come from accepting there is a higher power and the realization that God is not here to restrict or punish us but to free us from the mental and physical bondage we place on ourselves. |

| The Kinks – David Watts Lyrics
|
As someone named David Watts this song has provided my friends with no end of amusement. Especially the line, "he is so gay and fancy-free". I can't tell you how many voicemails I've received that simply sing, "fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa".
I wish I could say my parents were inspired to name me after the song but they'd never heard it until I played it for them. Beyond the name I have nothing in common with the title character. I'm perpetually broke, can't get a date to save my life and certainly a "dull and simple lad". I, too, wish I could be like "David Watts". |

Great song. Seems to be speaking to the emptiness found in the lives of the wealthy. Or, the children of the wealthy. Key bumps in the bathroom is something I've witnessed many times. Ha, ha. Beyond the lyrics the music is also fantastic. Great dynamics. The chorus explodes and is immediately catchy. Why isn't this on the radio? |

| White Lion – Road To Valhalla Lyrics

Another great song by White Lion. If you know anything about Viking lore, or if you've ever read Beowulf, you will appreciate this song. Valhalla was "heaven" to the ancient Vikings. A strange subject to sing about for a "pop metal" band but worth a listen. |

I don't see an allusion to communism in any way. This song is not political. From my perspective the lyrics refer to the time spoken of in the Bible when Christ will reign over a peaceful earth. There will be no need for presidents when the world is united under "God". Seeking solutions to our problems in human leaders (presidents, kings, czars or prime ministers) is futile. No earthly being can ever bring about peace. It is a futile goal because humans are inherently selfish and corrupt. |

I love this song. The "rumble seat" ceased to exist in cars back in the mid-30's. It was located where the trunk sits nowadays and could be flipped up to accommodate extra passengers. Very uncomfortable and unstable. In a traffic accident anyone in the rumble seat was as good as dead. |

A viking prayer set to a fantastic musical score. The guitar solo is absolute perfection. The vocals and overall production are pure 80's. And that's a good thing. |

Beautiful song. They lyrics are upbeat and simple yet their meaning can be taken on many levels. To me, it's almost religious in tone. A song about rising above, overcoming obstacles and finding something real in a world of bullshit. |

A song about Apartheid, I think. Poignant at the time but now more historical in nature. The theme is universal, though. It can apply to anyone who is being persecuted. |

| White Lion – Farewell to you Lyrics

|
Simple and heartfelt. This is one of White Lion's best. They knew their style of music was out of fashion at this point but rather than sounding bitter they sign off with a great big "Thank You" to the fans. Filled with good vibes and chiming guitars this song stands as a defiant testament to a time when rock was more about the music than the image. "Rock will come and rock will go, the scene will change and time will show...". The "na, na, na" vocals that close out the song are the coup de grace. |

Another amazing song by Extreme. The guitar work by Nuno is stunning, as usual. I love the vocal harmonies. Thick, rich and full of emotion. If you haven't heard this song, do yourself a favor and download it ASAP. A contemplative, yet entirely "unreligious", song about Christ's crucifixion. The musicianship and production quality of Extreme's music is on full display here. |

"Try and catch me coppers. You stinkin' badges better think again". Steve Taylor is the f'ing man. His tongue-in-cheek lyrics finally caught up with him on this one. He pissed off a lot of people with this classic. The music is fantastic. It's what made me listen in the first place. The horns and bass line are sublime. Anyone who sees this as anti-abortion is crazy. Anyone who sees it as pro-life is a moron. It's a song about a crazy asshole. Period. |

We don't need no bullshit. This song was wayyyyyy ahead of it's time. I'm surprised Bob Jones didn't have Steve Taylor killed for this one. But then again, Taylor only sold a few thousand albums. Jones had millions of followers. The truth always takes a back seat, doesn't it? |

This guy is to be respected for the shit he got away with under the guise of "christian rock". His lyrics carry more weight today then they did in the early 80's. Was he a "tongue-in-cheek" prophet? No, he's just a guy who read his Bible. |

In retrospect, this song is sheer genius. The music may be early 80's New Wave but the lyrics are timeless. Every convert to Christianity should listen to this song. Separate the emotion from the reality. Don't be fooled. Uncle Steve knows what he's talking about. |

| Living Colour – Which Way To America Lyrics

Living Colour aren't from England. Vernon Reid grew up there but the band formed in NYC and all members were born in the States.
Beyond that, this song kicks ass. One of their best. Back in 1988 I considered this song a testament to what I felt growing up in the US during the Reagan years. Little did I know the worst was yet to come. ha, ha. |

| Living Colour – Broken Hearts Lyrics

The rhythm alone is worth a listen. The bass guitar carries the song along side a drummer playing deep in the pocket. When the breakdown comes, and the listener finally realizes what the drums have been saying throughout the song, there is nothing left to do but weep. Meanwhile, Vernon Reid manipulates the atmosphere with his guitar so subtly that when he finally does unleash his solo it's like the sun shining on the North Pole. Or something like that. Great f***ing song regardless. |

| John Mellencamp – I Need A Lover Lyrics

The musical intro is worth a listen by itself. Fantastic drum work anchors the all around tight musicianship during the two minute instrumental buildup.
The lyrics are simple, to the point and certainly inspired by a bad relationship. One of the greatest "kiss-off" songs of all time in my opinion. Nothing profound here, and perhaps a bit harsh in tone, but this song is musically inspired and thematically aggressive enough to demand repeat listens and a place in classic rock history. |

One of the best songs from 4 Non Blondes. The lyrics and music both have attitude and a sense of humour. A call to arms cleverly disguised as 90's punk/funk/pop. Linda Perry could sing the phone book and it would sound good. Add the bad-ass drumming and funky riffs and you've got one of the best albums of the 90's. |

Is Canada the only place producing decent rock bands these days? Beyond Kings of Leon there ain't shit here in the US that can compare to the Stills or Sam Roberts.
This song is another earnest rocker from the Stills. The U2 influence is apparent but far from an outright copy (Coldplay..ahem). This is classic rock at it's finest. Love the drums. |

| Bruce Springsteen – You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch) Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
One of my favorites by the Boss. The hard driving beat marches up and down your spine making your head bob and your ass shake.
I love the lyrics, "I came home from work and switched on channel 5. There was a pretty little girl looking straight in to my eyes. I watched as she wiggled back and forth across the screen. She didn't get me excited she just made me feel mean".
It's a total rejection of the "sex sells" philosophy. Hot women are a dime a dozen. They're everywhere on your televisions and in your magazines. The author is tired of being manipulated by something as cheap and superficial as physical beauty and he's pissed off. A refreshing perspective to say the least.
The rest of the song continues the themes of frustration and anger Bruce is experiencing at the double standards and hypocrisy in the modern world. Very similar to the Stones, "Satisfaction", both in tone and attitude.
One of Springsteen's best rockers for sure.
