Flight of the Conchords – Carol Brown Lyrics 14 years ago
The theme is the same throughout the song, but seen from two different perspectives. It seems the guy has been involved in a series of relationships that didn't work, possibly for several reasons - one of them being that he is not trying hard enough, which of course the ladies emphasize. And therefore they left him.

I believe the line "But I'm hoping that you'll stick around" is directed towards the girl *after* Carol Brown, as Carol has already left him. Actually the music video (or rather the clip from the series) illustrates it better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cGoDns8wTA

I do agree that this isn't their best song, but you can hardly blame the the switching perspective.

Superlatives truly are not enough (but what else can I use? Pictures that say more than a thousand words?)..

Anyway, I've been wondering - what does "b-a-t" refer to? I've got the feeling I should get this (and if not, I'll blame my non-american citizenship).

Bottom line... Here's a superlative: Brilliant.

Antony and the Johnsons – Cripple and the Starfish Lyrics 16 years ago
I absolutely agree with the last commentators - the two gentlemen Nope512 and Songmeaning1980. My first thought was that it perfectly describes a hurtful relationship, and though (or rather because) I might suffer from a dirty mind, I can't imagine the first stanza being about much else than those certain acts of gay love, as Nope512 mentioned. That being unless you only look at it as an unspecific sense of domination in the relationship.

And yet this song is so incredibly touching. Antony's raw words go right through my bones. It can merely rip open any mental wounds one might have. And how its honesty have me believe he would indeed cut off his finger to prove his love to the dominating, violent Mr. Muscle, whose love is hiding behind his fists, or maybe he doesn't love at all.

And at the moment this all keeps me from sleep at 3.30 am. Been thinking about turning to pure instrumental music containing no such intruguing lyrics, but... then I would be missing out on half the fun of music. So all in all I guess this is a price worth paying for all the wonders of the great musical poets on record.

Bottomline: I'm tired and will regret having raised my internet voice while having too much to say about too little to too many people. But hey, who gives a damn... I'm still happy, though not like a starfish. More like a seahorse.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics 16 years ago
Not sure if this has been mentioned in the thread, but Mr Lenny Cohen himself spent 5 years writing "Hallelujah", and ended up with a total of 80 verses, according to himself (and Leonard Cohen never lies.), and probably picked the best ones out. So I guess (or hope) that Jeff Buckley got his two last verses from Cohen's collection. The fact that he uses all 6 published verses Live in London might be a sign of this..?

Leonard Cohen – Suzanne Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought I'd just point out a detail:

About Suzanne:
"And you know that she will trust you"

About Jesus:
"And you think maybe you'll trust him"

About Suzanne:
"And you know that you can trust her"

Is he saying the emotional (romantic love?) bond with Suzanne is stronger than with Jesus? That Suzanne is slightly more trustworthy? But still "he" might trust Jesus (after some consideration?), which doesn't correspond directly to him being a jew, although that's not the point... Or maybe he's just saying love is stronger than personal faith. He should know.
