I forgot to add that I don't think the Eagles (or Jackson Browne) coined the term "take it easy." They may have popularized it, but I know I've heard characters on a 60s TV show say it, which was before this song was written in the early 70s. |

Looove this song. It's just so good. Apparently Jackson Browne wrote basically the whole song, except Glenn Frey added "It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford / slowin' down to take a look at me," which just pulled the whole song together, so Glenn Frey got to take co-composing credit.
And I agree with everyone else about the meaning... except I don't really think the main focus is polygamy. |

Don Henley said in an interview that the "do something" part of this song is was inspired by how when he was growing up, if anyone felt depressed or bad or something, people would just tell them to "do something," and that that's enough to deal with problems instead of turning to all the support groups and therapy and all everything we have like that today. |

I can't believe no one has commented on this song! But why is it in all caps? It's not shouty...
So the meaning of this is pretty clear, but I think it's also important to point out that Glenn Frey said he mostly wrote this for his kids. He also said in an interview to listen to it thinking of the words coming from a dying man. Even though it says "no sad goodbyes" in the song, this is an extremely good, but extremely sad song for me. |
