I believe that along with the story I've interpreted in my head for this album, the narrator had committed suicide in Car Underwater and then regretted it as heaven was more like hell in The Truth About Heaven. In this song, I think it's him remembering his reasoning for committing suicide. He's saying why he needed to do it, but also thinking to himself that he would have done anything for his girlfriend..

Continuation to my comment on Car Underwater, I believe this CD is a story and this is after the narrator dies in the "car" and goes up to heaven with certain expectations maybe trying to escape some earthly pain. When he gets to heaven he's so weighted by his sorrow (rain) that he returns to earth to sees his girlfriend and then begins feeling an immense pain from his own regret.

Well, if you listen to the full album, you can hear a story. The story starts with Car Underwater, where the narrator commits suicide and faces suffering and sorrow in the next world, hence the song that follows is The Truth About Heaven. That song shows much sorrow and unsatisfied expectations maybe because the narrator was hoping to escape some sort of pain but now has to deal with it and learn to move passed it.
