The Rakes – When Tom Cruise Cries Lyrics 16 years ago
"Oh what do yours constitute with sparked,"

Surely that line actually is:

"I walked to yours cause the tube was f*cked"

Doves – Almost Forgot Myself Lyrics 17 years ago
It is about someone who falls back into their drug addiction, but then realises that they don't need drugs to get high and feels guilty for all the hard work they put into staying clean.

Doves – Black And White Town Lyrics 17 years ago
It's definitely him growing up in his depressing sattelite town and eventually escaping to live in the city. He is trying to convince someone else to get out as well. The line: "you took me underground in a black and white town" is his attack on this person who was trying to drag him down into the doldrums of the sattelite town (or black and white town) before he got out.

Doves – The Sulphur Man Lyrics 17 years ago
This is definitely about someone in deep depression and suicidal. 'The sulphur man' is death or maybe a personification of the person as death. The 'pills' could be anti-depressants, but I think they more likely represent drug misuse that intensified his depression. 'Fate brought you next to ghosts' suggests that he got into this state as a result of personal suffering, probably the loss of someone close. 'They talk in code, looking for the way out' is people in the same state as this guy all share a common goal that no-one sane can really understand, they want to kill themselves. This guy cannot be helped anymore, he has to save himself, he needs to 'want to live', 'learn to cope' with his problems and 'find what really matters' to him. All anyone else can do is 'hope'.

Doves – Satellites Lyrics 17 years ago
I might have got this one totally wrong but I have a theory. Satellites is reference to the Philip K Dick novels VALIS and Radio Free Albemuth. These novels although presented as fiction are said to have represented Dick's actual philosophical beliefs. The idea is that God can communicate with us through satellites. Light is beamed from the satellite directly into us containing important theological information. Hence the reference to religion and light. The protagonist in VALIS suffers with his mental health due to several personal losses, to the point of full blown psychosis. It is only through contact with the satellite and his ongoing quest to find 'the saviour' that he can regain his sanity. The novel is every bit about recovering from madness as it is about religion.

I'm not saying that Doves necessarily share these beliefs, but I honestly think that the song is about loss, madness and wanting to be saved.

Doves – Caught By The River Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about loss and moving on. A subject common in most Doves songs. It could be about suicide or drug addiction, possibly both, but the important theme is escapism generally.

Doves – Catch The Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is obviously about the breaking of a relationship and of missed opportunities. But also subtly coming to terms with the demoralizing realisation that all their hard work had literally gone up in smoke when a fire burned down their studio and destroyed everything that was Sub Sub. They needn't have been so disheartened by the loss though. In fact the fire was certainly the defining moment in their progression. Their music as doves is in a whole different league. The fire remains a theme throughout their music particularly in their early work.

One of my favourite Doves tracks.
