Someone has said that the message of the song is "there's no god". Haven't read anything about the second verse of the song, that "Where the West was all but won", that sounds a little strange to me. The first thing I recalled in my mind was a song by R.E.M. (the fray have done a cover of a song by rem, btw), called "How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us", from the album "new adventures in hi-fi" Also in that song there are some lyrics about harsh life and, on the other hand, a god that does not exist: "The story is a sad one, told many times The story of my life in trying times" [...] "I didn't wear glasses cause I thought it might rain Now I can't see anything I made a mistake, chalked it up to design I cracked through time, space, Godless and dry I point my nose to the northern star, Watch the decline from a hazy distance" "how the west was won", I discovered, after some googlin', is a Wester series by John Ford, depicting the conquest of the West in an epic tune... Could be related somehow, maybe... |

Very moving to me, got shivers all over first time I've heard it. And I think it's "No one can TELL you where you alone must go" instead of TAKE. |
