Linda Ronstadt – The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress Lyrics 9 years ago
This song has been covered several times. This is the one I'm familiar with. I always thought this was a precursor to a better choice of music for LR. Penned by Jimmy Webb I think he borrowed the title from a Robert Heinlein book by the same name. However the book was about a revolt against a tyrannical government on the moon, the term "harsh mistress" means a cruel, brutal master in the feminine sense, the moon. I'd like to see this song as using the term mistress as someone soft as in a lover. The song refers to a nostalgic moment in the past "once the sun did shine" when things were wonderful. Yet the reality is that it really wasn't, the love fell out, the memory is false, etc. Thus the reality is the moon who is double edged, a lovely memory but yet harsh because it did break your heart somehow. On the other hand I wonder if harsh mistress means more literally the moon is a tough teacher, you can dream of what you want but the harsh reality is that you can't have it without hard work, risk, consequences. In any case this is not only a very pretty song, its beautiful poetry.

Rush – Bastille Day Lyrics 11 years ago
It's a bit historically inaccurate. Let them eat cake is a myth of course. The storming of the Bastille was an act that started the French revolution, yes but the beheadings didn't take place for several years. There were only a few prisoners in the Bastille who were basically debtors or actual criminals. What the people were really after was the armory inside to protect themselves from the troops occupying Paris. Once they had taken over the prison the king's hand was forced since it was obvious he was broke and couldn't afford to pay an unwilling army. This act also gave the national assembly a legitimacy in which to draft a constitutional monarchy. We all know that this eventually ended in the Reign of Terror and the end of the king and queen. The king was somewhat of a stupid man who was given several chances to save himself and his monarchy, he kind of had it coming.

Joe Walsh – Class of '65 Lyrics 13 years ago
Well I got a letter from a high school friend
Who I never really know that well, he wrote me
And the mothball letter on a blue and white sweater
From the Class of '65 got me planning, planning

Standing in a room full of faces (in a room), I knew them all
But I could not place the names with the faces
Now converstaion makes me nervous
I just smile and nod along
When it comes to telling stories, I could go on and on

I went downstars to straighten my tie
Laid on a table I chance to pass by were some stories

On some notebook paper from some high school friends
And they all had tales to tell
And they all sent pictures of their families
And the stories read so well

I just stood there and pretended I had something in my eye
And the tears fell on the letters
I had to, sorry we missed ya, maybe next time
Tell everyone I said hi, hi

From the Class of '65, hi
From the Class of '65, hi

John Denver – Prisoners Lyrics 16 years ago
Surprised nobody's comment on this song yet. Wonderfully captures a dreary life, wishing for something more, living an incomplete life without that special someone. Kind of anti-war in the end.

Great guitar work by John Denver. Would love to learn how to play it.

Neil Young – Dreaming Man Lyrics 16 years ago
Classic Neil Young. Love the backing vocals and harmonies. I think this is about a man who can't adapt to the suburb way of life. His wife/gf/significant other is the other way, she gets "lost in the mall". He doesn't feel that he's "home" but instead dreams of another time and place. The theme reminds me of the Rush song Subdivisions -- "Nowhere is the dreamer/Or the misfit so alone".
