Fatboy Slim – Weapon Of Choice Lyrics 7 years ago
@[D_Cat:26179] It's partly that, but the meaning is ambiguous. It is both the weapon you choose because it's best and the weapon of choosing itself. The narrator uses his voice and his ability to choose as weapons to achieve his goals. Although I say weapons, there's no evidence that he actually hurts anyone. He certainly doesn't force them to take options they don't want "you can go with with or you can go with that".

Fatboy Slim – Weapon Of Choice Lyrics 7 years ago
The weapon is both the sound of his voice and his ability to choose - the weapon of choice. He has grown organically, i.e. he has naturally developed and now he has the confidence to roam going where he wants to. It's more than just his personal development however, more than being a man, it's more than his girl he has found deeper meaning through communication and freedom.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Song of Joy Lyrics 9 years ago
Why assume that the man killed his wife _and_ family? Children are most often killed by the mother after all. If he found the children killed he could have then killed his wife in a similar manner. When he got the housecall he went out to get himself an alibi. He now kills to make it seem like the killings were the first of a serial killer.

Hunters & Collectors – Holy Grail Lyrics 10 years ago
Taking the "The author is dead" approach for a while, the meaning that most makes sense is the futility of obsession.

"Started out seeking fortune and glory
...
When you spend lifetime trying to get your hands
On the holy grail"
Note _trying_ to get your hands on the holy grail, not necessarily succeeding. Given what happens later in the song joining the "Crusade", adopting the obsession is a _horrible_ idea that bring only suffering to the obsessed and everyone around him.

It tells how we "ran into millions" of lives or dollars lost but "nobody got paid" because the obsession cost too much to pursue.

The locals, the victims of this crusade are "hiding in the snow". They fear the obsessed people more than probable frostbite and possible death from exposure. There is nothing left to plunder because the obsession has consumed everything. The final achievement of the obsession doesn't bring prosperity, satisfaction In stead they are surrounded by carrion birds clearly waiting for their deaths. Nobody deserves to die but this obsession has clearly led many to their deaths.

The narrator claims he's been searching for an easy way to avoid looking at reality. This might be because he doesn't want to face the costs that his obsession for himself and others, or it might mean that the obsession was the easy way to avoid facing reality. Without it he doesn't know how to live. It has brought him both joy and pain but neither were real.

He wakes up from the dream of obsession, the dream that if you just get this one thing everything will be fine. He is alone because he's sacrificed all relationships to the obsession. The "wounds" have faded and healed, just like the grail was supposed to do. But the real wounds are deeper. He is still obsessed with the grail even after it's revealed to be a dream. He is still a slave to obsession, he just can't pursue it.

Kim Wilde – Cambodia Lyrics 11 years ago
The pilot saw things, and probably did things that deeply affected him. Not just bombing or shooting, but something else, something covert. The guilt and horror slowly start to destroy him.

Then he says to "pack a bag", note, only one, and he'll meet her. Clearly he planned on going somewhere with her but why? And if they're going away why not tell her where? Because he was getting away from what he'd done, and possibly telling people about it. He is killed, but there's no mention of the air force telling her what happened.

If he was killed on a mission, even a secret one, you'd expect they'd tell the wife. Swear her to secrecy maybe, but still she'd be told. Otherwise she'd make a fuss and ask where he was, endangering security. But they didn't tell her, because he was probably killed by the people he worked with, to stop him talking.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't think it has to be communism. Any corrupt political movement fits. He's offering you money, a car, self-respect, if you do what he wants but his hand is red with blood. He appeals to the poor and hopeless. That fits communist and fascist rabble-rousers.

Crowded House – Better Be Home Soon Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree. The partner is not necessarily physically absent, but they are absent. They are denying the problem, and for a while the narrator believed them, but now he/she knows the truth and it's ultimatum time.

Rod Stewart – Maggie May Lyrics 12 years ago
No the narrator isn't paying the bills, he actually has no idea how to get money if he's not living at her place eating her food. He doesn't have the skills to earn a living yet, and he really should get back to high school to acquire them. But the sex is too good and even though he knows she isn't really interested in him as a person, doesn't love him, his heart won't let him go. He is so in love/lust that even though he can rationally see this isn't going to end well, he doesn't move.

It's a man reassuring his family that he's not going to jump from a high place and kill himself. The pressure he feels to be a hero and protect people is getting to him, but he cannot justify suicide. He's "not that naive" that it will solve the problems around him. However he's looking for Kryptonite, a way to die, but he can't find it and remains trapped in a one way street.

Black Sabbath – Iron Man Lyrics 13 years ago
The man in the iron mask wasn't deformed. In the Dumas novel he was the twin of the king, kept hidden because they didn't want a disputed sucession. Historically he wasn't in an iron mask but people thought he was. He was locked up in the Bastille for decades probably because he knew too much about the king's girlfriend helping to poison people.

Black Sabbath – Iron Man Lyrics 13 years ago
If Jesus does not exist (or if he does) I can judge good by the standard of consistencyand reciprocity (which is another kind of consistency). This is a far better standard from the point of view of actually benefitting human beings than God's standards, which have no ryhme or reason. Punishing people for emotions rather than actions (and involuntary ones at that, some women are just hot) is obviously far less useful to human beings that punishing them for violating the law of equal freedom. It is not true that noo human can prove a universal positive or negative. For instance there is no person who claims that a human being cannot prove a universal positive or negative that isn't claiming a universal negative and therefore no person doing so who isn't inconsistent. See how easy that was? If your God was really a good guide to anything he would have pointed that out to you before you argued.

Dire Straits – The Man's Too Strong Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think it's about Che Guevera, for a start Che begged for his life, he wasn't heroically defiant. Secondly why would anyone think they had to appologise for killing him?

I think it's significant that the man says "They say" he's a war criminal. He's "fading away" not about to be executed, so it's doubtful he's a nazi. He genuinely believes he has "striven for peace", despite his warlike methods. I think "the man" is his old commander, who he could not break away from, could not betray. Remember "they" not we all heard "him" say his last remarks, not "we". It's about the failure to truly repent one's sins because of the hold a powerful man still has on you.
