Blind Melon – Deserted Lyrics 16 years ago
Grab my knee and look at me
And try to tell me I'll be home soon
Asleep in my bed and unstoned
I'm tired of me this way

First stanza
: grab my knee… like a father or grandfather does when he wants to tell you a story or direct you…
Unstoned… admission of drug use and not truly being in reality…grabbing the knee would refocus him…
Like a young child often needs…

I don't know what I've gotten into
But I'm glad it's now instead of sooner
This desert heat has crowded me strong
With a wish I had for winter

Second stanza:
He’s confused but is glad he is old and wise enough to understand that he is confused by life…
He feels crowded even in a desert… lost in a crowd…he wishes for isolation and desolation of winter…

It's not as gentle as it sounds
As though it sounded yesterday
When I heard a leaf of my life hit the ground
And as a bottle cap flew from my fingers

Third stanza:

The interplay of seasons… desert heat (summer/ adolescences… youth…. ) fall (changing , brilliance of leaves turns to falling leaves…entering of winter days… twilight of a day…of life… impending death… despair of drug use…
The buzz is leaving him…)

I don't know what I've gotten in to
But I'm glad it's now instead of sooner
This desert heat has crowded me strong
With a wish I had for winter

Fourth Stanza: a repeat of the chorus… again he is overwhelmed by his choices… where he is where he lives…the direction or lack there of in his life… and wishing for winter to just come and bury him in a way

..And the sands blew in my eyes
I stood on the edge and looked down to see
The light of a new life, shinning up on me

(sand… desert… lack of clarity of vision…confusion…. Trails…drug reference… )
New life — a child…. Rebirth… born again reference…. Recovery from drugs….
HIS Own childhood…when things were easier…_)

...With a wish that I had
The sand blew in my eyes

(wishing for that “new life” turns into a desert mirage…recovery… his old child like innocence…disappears…)

In the howling wind comes a stinging rain

* Rain as a CLEANSING metaphor…also stinging rain can be bullets…

See it driving nails

* Again — Christian imagery and yet bullets…

Into the souls on the tree of pain

* Tree of pain — Christian imagery

From the firefly, a red orange glow

* The firefly with a red orange glow --- helicopters or planes firing…

See the face of fear

Running scared in the valley below

* The valley below -- as the planes are “above” in height and stature… power, prestige…etc.

Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue

In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum

* Locust — reference to locust plague — book of revelations

Jacob wrestled the angel
And the angel was overcome

You plant a demon seed
You raise a flower of fire
See them burning crosses

* Hatred and indignation — imagery of racism and prejudice

See the flames higher and higher

Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue

This guy comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush

* Thorn bush — Christian imagery

Like all the colors of a royal flush
And he's peeling off those dollar bills
Slapping them down
One hundred, two hundred

* Money as a motivation

And I can see those fighter planes
And I can see those fighter planes

* Money of America backing the planes that fought in el Salvador

Across the mud huts where the children sleep
Through the alleys of a quiet city street

You take the staircase to the first floor
Turn the key and slowly unlock the door
As a man breathes into a saxophone

And through the walls you hear the city groan
Outside is America
Outside is America

* AMERICA — 2 americas (tentative ALBUM title by the way..)

* America as in US and America — the western hemisphere — mostly latino, poor , devout Christians…

Across the field you see the sky ripped open

* Another Christian imagery — good Friday as well as revelation mention it

See the rain through a gaping wound

* Wound — monetary devide, moral decay, wound in the side of Jesus..etc

Pounding on the women and children
Who run
Into the arms
Of America

* The ARMS are just that — again 2 American sides US played both sides…
Outstretched arms to HELP the women and children
As well as the military weapons we supplied to put them in harms way

You never really know if they run into guns or support…
In later LIVE versions the implication is they run into GUNS.

It’s by far one of my favorite songs by them.

U2 – Magnificent Lyrics 17 years ago
ok there is SO MUCH I LOVE about this...

and i really think this is his song to his father...upon his passing and really calls in mind to me the songs of October album.

the first stanza is about "a moment" or life...and how with the passing of life he hasnt a clue...
and even though its just a moment... this life has him weathered "black and blue"

born to sing for you" talks about his father being an operatic singer and asking him to sing..
mcuh like Bono's career now... he sings for people...

he didnt "have a choice" it was his calling or gift and what his father aspired from him.
its in his blood so to speak...to "life you up"

"whatever song you want me to" meaning whatever song the crowd wants , his father wants..etc

i give you back my voice... with his fathers passing he now sings to FULFILL what his father intended him to be...a singer. no longer a rebellious punk rocker but a more operatic one...
he is becoming his father's vision and softening in his old age.
a realization of his mortality.. hence the "space and time" line in first stanza...

justfied til we die... you and i...

how they both were stubborn but that it was always about love...
which makes it magnificent

ok maybe a Little bit of a reach but i dont think i am WAY off
