Ed Sheeran – The A Team Lyrics 13 years ago
I think most of this song is explained and although very poetic, quite explicit in its reference material (which is a fancy way of saying its about a hooker and you all figured it out).

I think the real beauty of the song is that it very well catches the feeling that we don't really know or understand this girl. She's basically a walking disaster and we may be able to explain how she became the way she is, but that's not what the song is about. It's about doing her justice, doing justice to her innocence as an 'Angel' (although apparently that was simply the name of the girl walking around the place that inspired Ed to write the song, but it adds a nice touch).

I think the only line that really refers to us, as in, us listeners and the rest of the world, is the line "We're just/all under the the upper hand." I haven't seen a proper description of this line yet, but I think it's the most beautiful line in the song because it is the only one I (as a non-drug-addict non-prostitute) can actually relate to and allows access to the story the song tells.

"Having the upper hand" means something in the line of "Having control" or "Having the next move". Saying we're just UNDER the UPPER hand seems to imply that we're close to being in control, but never quite. We're just under that state at which we rise above ourselves and realize what our next move should be.

I think it refers to her as well and how she, to cope with this lack of control, "Goes mad for a couple grams". Maybe that one line is the only access we have to the girl, because we recognize her lack of control, we are 'just under the upper hand' as well.

Anyway, I'm not sure that quite catches it, but maybe that's what makes it so poetic. Enjoy this gem of a song.

I do think it's one of the least songs on Pop, but I do like it. I also happen to like Playboy mansion, not because of brilliantly written lyrics, but because of a blatant sort of frustration, very shallow. But that's a different song.

In this song I like the atmosphere. It's dark, yet it describes nice things, mainly. I dunno why I have to "love it or hate it". I like it, but it's no "Do you feel loved" "Mofo" or "Please"...

U2 – Moment Of Surrender Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not too agreeing. Great work on it though :) Like "The stone was semi-precious." I hadn't figured that one out yet...

I think you overstate the reference to the "cross" a bit too much. That's not where the focus lies, in my opinion. But ye know, you're a Christian so you'd be more keen on accentuating that.

Your comment on the complaint-bit isn't bad, but it seems to me it's more about the character's pain to stop. Might be wrong though. The idea of people simply counting down till the pain goes away is beautifully true in its own right.

I do feel you're very off at "Of vision over visibility", simply because your line "Visibility is simply the ability of our eyes to look around" is not true. Visibility is about BEING SEEN, not about seeing, leading me to believe the line refers to the point at which a person stops caring about his own notability and appearance and starts focussing on what the world around him is like (or at least shifts the balance towards the latter in these two).

Let me know what you think :)

Seems to me it has something to do with suicide. Not denying references to religion and drugs.

He's on a subway, people are waiting for their trains, not looking at him. I feel he's about to throw himself in front of a train, and people might believe this is so, but they're just "waiting for the pain to stop".

Moment of surrender, I think is the moment at which the character surrenders his will to live, and his life by throwing himself to the train.

Whatever it means (one of the things I love about U2 is that we'll never know), it's a brilliant song :)
