Manchester Orchestra – I've Got Friends Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about drugs
I've got friends in all the right places (dealers)
I know what they want (money/drugs)
and I know they don't want me to stay (not real friends, they only want drugs)

dirt in the ground is what I see (death, buried)

'cause you are not alive (drugs again)
when I need you (dealers/love)
I need it quickly (drugs)
in case you never know (love)

it's about addiction i think
lovers who are both addicted
not only to drugs but to each other
it's almost like they're addicted to destruction

Bright Eyes – Road to Joy Lyrics 17 years ago
I apologize to you all beforehand, this comment will most likely make no sense at all, and I will have a vast amount of grammatical errors...
(that ellipsis was unnecessary)
also my interpretation will be completely wrong, which makes it an interpretation I suppose.

I do believe that this is an opposition, more so a description, of the "American Way."
The humming cemetery is a reference to death's consistency, a life is always ending somewhere, at any given time, thus the cemeteries are "humming". However, it does not mean that there is a body being physically laid to rest in a cemetery, because not every deceased person is buried in a cemetery. It is just an abstract and creative way of mentioning the consistency of death and destruction; plus it fits with the rest of the verse musically. It can also be attributed to the deaths of those fighting in the war, either way the line suits the overall idea of the song.
Ever sense our beginnings, we have been given this idea of pure gratification, of complete happiness, and it has been ingrained in us that we should allow nothing to stand in our way on our path to happiness. It's the "American struggle," that there is always something more and we should do everything we can to reach that something. Eventually, this way of thinking leads to the destruction of ourselves and of others. The destruction and the constant repetition of the past leads to the apathetic quality of our nature. I don't think we stop caring, necessarily, but we shut down and do our best to blanket the horrors around us. Some people turn to religion to close out the world around them. They worship and believe looking for an almost guaranteed joy, which can be found in heaven. Some turn to drugs for the instant gratification and the fact that everything "bad" goes away for that moment in time.
We fight wars, because we want power and control. We invent to move forwards. We struggle because we're alive. We're evolving all the time because we always have to be moving. It's a vicious cycle we are placed in, searching and wanting more, so we drive ourselves to a certain point of insanity, which is sane to us. The Road To Joy is the moral struggle of everyday life. It's what lingers in our minds and what constantly surrounds us. I suppose The Road To Joy, is all of us, individually and collectively. An endless road that is taken by all to reach a perfection we have not seen.

This is cheesy and long, and strays far from the song, however, I will post it because I have wasted all of this time.
:(
