I think that this song is about how people don't care about the 'why' anymore, they only care about the product. But how can you understand the product if you don't know how it came about? Dance puppet boy, accept what someone else is telling you without even bothering to understand why they are telling you this, give them the reaction that they want, and if you do a good job accepting their bulls**t then they will have something similar for you soon. Just bob your head as you are senselessly brainwashed by society into accepting everything at face value without reading into it. Feel, think, act like your a human being again capable of personal rational thought. Also instead of society it could be directly linked to the music/entertainment culture and how people just like senseless entertainment that keeps them occupied rather that thoughtful entertainment, and when a think-piece does come along you are so used to the senseless entertainment that you don't even bother to look for a meaning. I would definitely say it is not about the relationship idea since at the end of that verse he says, "see, you don't even know what I'm talking about." I think that this whole verse was just put in there to see how many people would try to interpret that verse because its more along the lines of what they want to hear, and easier to interpret since it can be taken at face value (a relationship gone bad), than the message he is trying to convey. Though due to the fact that hurt does likes to use relationship issues to talk about different aspects of life, this might be completely wrong. Just my opinion could be way off of what hurt wanted to say, this is just the way that I took the song. |

Definitely one of my favorite Hurt songs so far, the violin solo kicks ass. My interpretation is that this song is about how the singer doesn't know where is he going with a relationship any longer, and he isn't sure whether to keep trying or just give up, so he is just going where the river (of life by my interpretation) takes him. Everything the other person in the relationship tells him about how they are going to change is a lie, they are still the same person with the same mindset/philosophy towards life and that will never change. Throughout all of his questioning, all that he does reminds him of the relationship, brings it closer to him and makes it more a part of him, but at the same time he cant get back what he has already lost and isn't sure whether he wants to lose even more. Like I said this is definitely one of hurts sweetest songs so if your a hurt fan and haven't heard this song yet check it out. |

I personally think that this song is about jesus, though being a System song I could be completely wrong. Why can't you see that you are my child, Why don't you know that you are my mind, Tell everyone in the world, that I'm you, Take this promise to the end of you. -In ancient cultures the son could not only speak for his father, but as if he were his father (Why don't you know that you are my mind). Jesus according to christian theology was the son of god and therefore also god. He went around the world performing 'miracles' proving that he was of divine creation, and would not renounce his followers saying that he was god until his death (he never personally says that he is god in the bible, but then again he did not write the bible) Take this promise for a ride, You saw the forest, now come inside, You took the legend for its fall, You saw the product of it all, No televisions in the air, No circumcisions on the chair, You made the weapons for us all, Just look at us now, -The promise could refer to the new testament, the new agreement with god that you could accept jesus as your personal savior and go to heaven while ignoring the old testament/agreement with god (no more circumcisions on the chair). The Weapons could refer to the gifts of the holy spirit (i.e. speaking in tongues, prophesy, teaching, ministry, evangelicalism, etc.) or perhaps to the countless wars that have been fought in the name of religion. You take the legend for a fall -the coming of the son of god was 'predicted' long before he was born. Again just my personal interpretation and insights. |
