Should be "And I've got mad hits like I was ROD CAREW" Carew played for the Twins and then the Angels in the 70's, won the batting title a few times http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Carew |

| Ever notice how the last notes of this song foreshadow the next? It's the same motif as the "You thought of everything..." part of "Velvet Waltz". Like kelsey3671 noted about "sound", and Velvet Waltz's "killing in the sun" and "left it in the sun" followed later by the song "Kicked it in the Sun". Lots of interconnections on this album. | |

I haven't listened to this closely with headphones on, but I imagined it might be "cease strife" in the last stanza -- makes more sense than "cease rights" Also: What are the back-up singers saying? |

The lines "...slow to understand/arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand" I think are a clear tip of the hat to the Rush song "Witch Hunt" from Moving Pictures: "Quick to judge, Quick to anger, Slow to understand Ignorance and prejudice And fear walk hand in hand." But I like how they added arrogance in place of prejudice -- fits with the song overall. |

Actually, the original line (on the liner notes of the LP) was "if you choose not to decide you cannot have made a choice", though "still" makes more sense. Also it's "you CAN pray for a place in heaven's unearthly estate", i.e. your life may suck ("kicked in the face") but you may believe you'll get your reward in the afterlife. The line "You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill" I always chose to read as an indictment of western/theistic religion -- fear of things for which there is no scientific evidence and the hypocrisy of those who preach peace and love but give us things like the Inquisition, subjugation and destruction of indigenous cultures in the name of spreading Christianity, etc. |

I agree with others' corrections, also I think it's "try your hardest, you'll still be a loser". I don't see it as that depressing of a song, more kind of "life is suffering, no one escapes death, so just accept it" which is (intended or not) sort of cool and Buddhist. |

| Devo – Going Under Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The first four lines (and the monotone in which they're sung) always made me think of someone who had joined a cult -- lured in by the "girl with the four red lips". | |

Kim is just spelling out Velouria -- V-E-L-O-U R-I-A I always imagined that Velouria was the name of the weird little belly-dancer doll that appeared in some of the CD art and on the single: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velouria Her black outfit looks like it could be velour. |

I have this song stuck in my head but instead of "Leslie Ann..." I keep hearing "Irving R. Levine"...:) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irving_R._Levine |
