U2 – Pride (In the Name of Love) Lyrics 14 years ago
One man come in the name of love
- Christ Jesus the man who came in the name of love, who is the Name of Love, Love incarnate, the God-man.

One man come and go
- Christ came, conquered and left this earth to return home where he lives forevermore.

One man come, he to justify
- Christ came to justify his people, to bare their sin and take their guilt. The Christian is justified by their faith in Christ.

One man to overthrow
- Christ overthrew the kingdom of Satan destroying he who has the power of death through his own death on the cross.

In the name of love
One more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love?
-What more could be done in the name of love than God himself in Christ reconciling the world to himself through the cross? A world that hated him but still he loved. And loves.

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
-A metaphor for the cross - a man (Christ) suspended between heaven and earth.

One man he resist
-Christ resisted the temptation, the world and the Devil.

One man washed on an empty beach
-The isolation of Christ on the cross - he looked for one to pity him but comforters he found none.

One man betrayed with a kiss
-A clear reference to the betrayal of Christ.

I can't help but view this section of the song as a hymn.

They could not take MLKs pride in the name of love means they could not take his pride in Christ. I pray no one ever takes my pride in the Name of Love.
Blessings

U2 – Magnificent Lyrics 17 years ago
Can't help but listen to this song as a hymn. I'm a Christian, thought I should declare myself. We listen through different ears and can hear notes of Grace where others cannot. Twas ever thus.

"I was born
I was born to be with you
In this space and time
After that and ever after.."

The Christian has been loved and chosen by God before ever he or she is born. There is an determined inevitability about his or her coming to faith. They are born to be with God. In history and in eternity.

"Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love can heal such a scar"

God's love leaves its mark on every believer. He gives them a new heart, put's his mark upon them spiritually speaking. We are all scarred by sin and only God's forgiving love and grace in Jesus Christ can heal that scar. It is livid, he can make us living.

"I was born
I was born to sing for you
I didn't have a choice but to lift you up
And sing whatever song you wanted me to
I give you back my voice
From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise"

This echoes Psalm 40. "He put a new song in my mouth, our God to magnify" (40). The Christian is born to sing and declare God's praises. Our hearts desire is to praise God, we have no choice but to lift him up. He is enthroned on the praises of his church. We give him back our voices. "From the womb" I see as a reference to the new birth, or regeneration, being "born again", which takes place when the soul becomes living in faith. This produces a joyful noise, it cannot but. Even those who cannot sing with their voices now sing in their heart to their Creator.

"Justified till we die, you and I will magnify
The Magnificent
Magnificent"

The Christian is justified by faith in Jesus Christ. It's a bit theological but a short explamation is that because of Christ's death on a hill outside Jerusalem 2000 years ago and his resurrection 3 days later in Gods eyes is pardoned, forgiven and it is "just as if I'd" never ever sinned in his sight. Knowing this he or she cannot help but "magnify the Magnificent" for all that he has done for them.
