| It was originally a Swedish folk song. It's about a young woman who's been arranged to marry this rich guy, who she doesn't love, so she locks herself away in her room while the guests are outside celebrating the coming wedding. Days pass and she still won't come out. Eventually, the guy she actually wants to marry (Roland) arrives in his ship, and she runs away with him. | |

The song's originally from Carmina Burana (the same opera O Fortuna is from) English translation: The sun warms everything, pure and gentle, once again it reveals to the world April's face, the soul of man is urged towards love and joys are governed by the boy-god. All this rebirth in spring's festivity and spring's power bids us to rejoice; it shows us paths we know well, and in your springtime it is true and right to keep what is yours. Love me faithfully! See how I am faithful: with all my heart and with all my soul, I am with you even when I am far away. Whosoever loves this much turns on the wheel. |

I originally thought it was a lullaby too, until I listened to the lyrics more closely. After the part where it says "Ich brenne für dich...Ich träume für dich...Ich liebe nur für dich" ("I burn for you...I dream for you...I love only for you") it's followed up with "Bis mein Stein bei dir liegt" ("until my stone lies next to you") Taking that along with some of the other lines, including "Ein letzter Schrei, Nun schlaf recht schön" ("a last scream, now sleep beautifully"), the references to winter, the storm being past, and the child being "free", I have to say it's a parent singing to their dead child. It's an incredibly sad song. |
