I know this song was written prior to the war in Iraq (I think this album came out in 2001), but the line "boys dripping blood sold for $2.99..." always makes me think of the war and how many believe it was fought over oil (which was also being sold for 2.99/gal not too long ago!)... just an observation. |

Yeah, like some comments mentioned, the Latin line comes from Horace's Odes but was satirized by Owen in his poem, "Dulce et Decorum Est".
This is one of my favorite songs. It's about a crisis of faith, perhaps spurred on by watching the horrors of war (like for Owen), or just the horrors of life in general. |

I absolutely love this song!!
I was wondering about the significance of the alarm clock. To me, this song is about reality not panning out how you want it to, like you need a "wake up call" (and an "alarm clock").
The Devil is carrying a sacred text and then pointing out its fallacies. at the same time, I feel like Mary and Joseph's relationship is falling apart and their original expectations for love are not being met ("nothing bright to write and nothing good to say")...even after going all the way to Paris (symbolizing their goals for their love)... and in the end it just culminates in not a Savior, but some guy using his powers for mundane uses (turning his bathwater to wine). |

this song suddenly made sense to me today. well, at least I could make it relevant to my life. My friend, whom I love as a sister, is going through some problems with depression and may be bipolar, and it seems like all her problems were set off by an abusive relationship that she was in recently that I didn't really know about. I just can't relate to what she's going through and she's getting "sadder, and sadder, and sadder" and I honestly "don't understand" but I just want to "kiss" it all away and make it "better." |
