The thing everyone misses here is that this is a nostalgic song. Every word "handwritten". When was the last time any of you actually picked up a pen? Back before texting and email, THIS is how you expressed your undying love for someone... with a goddamned pen. You poured it all out in the dim light of your room staying up way passed your bedtime bleeding words to a page. And it was very personal and intimate. There was a power in the writing and it took real passion and commitment to accomplish it. Now... pfft... a text message saying "LuvU" is supposed to suffice... or a tweet... or a relationship status on Facebook. It's sad that youth today don't even realize how deprived of passion they've become... they don't know what they're missing. |

| I agree it's an awesome song and it gets me everytime too... but on the rest of it I can't agree. My best advice for you is to STOP reading all the crap you're reading... STOP listening to the people you're listening to... and STOP believing all the BS you're believing. The WORLD is not at the edge of disaster. The world is always been in turmoil and has been since the beginning of time. Why are we still here? Why are YOU still here? You're still here because everyone before you stood the hell up and fought. We all have moments where we feel we're not strong enough to continue but then we do. And everyone before us did, too. If you're somehow worried about the Earth (aka climate change, whatever) just STOP. I work for a certain US space agency ... and let me tell you that which is called "settled science" is NOT settled. If you worked here you'd understand... we don't know as much as we profess. The Earth will not shrivel up and die... and it's all not going to go away in 10 years like Prince Charles said... or 20 like Al Gore said... or 100 like the UN says. The problem with all this hyperbole about the Earth is that some people really do despair and fret and fear and worry... and THAT is what the whole thing is about. It's about control... don't give up your control. Fight... don't lament that something beautiful dies... CREATE something beautiful yourself. | |

Okay just to clarify a bit... Republicans are not "against gays" nor is it two-faced to be gay and a Republican. Statistically, the group most against gay marriage is not Republicans, it's African-Americans. You wouldn't say African-Americans are "against gays" or that they're somehow two-faced for being anti-dicrimination UNLESS it's discrimination against gays. And let's not forget that, also statistically, African-Americans are predominantly Democrats. Anyway, on to the song... I believe Stephen is just trying to point out the irony of the situation he's singing about. Many Republicans stood against gay marriage (NOT AGAINST GAYS, JUST GAY MARRIAGE). Stephen goes on for awhile about how this "Couple of queens" has destroyed the family and destroyed marriage. And then he finds the culprits are actually gay Republicans. Therein lies the irony... and thats how it ties into the theme of real vs. fake. Are you real to me... or are you non-dairy creamer? And to some extent, all of us are a little bit non-dairy creamer. I think Stephen is imploring us to be better than that. My favorite band ever... can't wait for the full album. Thanks! -Ceeeeez |
