| A 31 year old man reminiscing a life of destruction makes a final run at his youth and hits on his ex girlfriend's 13 year old daughter. | |

| Drive-By Truckers – Where the Devil Don't Stay Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Love this song. This line still baffles me: "The only blood that's any cleaner is the blood that's blue or greener Without either you just get meaner and the blood you gave gives you away " |

| Drive-By Truckers – Decoration Day Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This is a song about generational sin and family honor. The son clearly hates his dad for the feud, but he honors him none the less while all the others fled. Beautiful. The guitar coda after the verse takes this song to another level. | |
| Drive-By Truckers – Loaded Gun in the Closet Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The gun is to keep that woman in her place. What is he is afraid of is that she will leave him. She knows it and that is why she is the too perfect wife that doesn't do anything but what he wants. She and the gun are his property one and the same, and both are kept safe in their place. One will never leave without the other. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Gravity's Gone Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
It think its a song about getting conned by the suits in the music industry to sell out. The phrase "falling for so long" means free fall to the bottom -- obvioiusly -- but also falling for the tricks of those "little demons." The bottom finally hit him when he woke up next to the strange woman. Most musicians never rise above the initial riches and lose it all to the cocaine and women. They are just distractions like the "champagne hand jobs and kissing ass" that allow the "small dicks" to lead you to sell your soul for their profit. As the second verse says, you have to follow your heart and not be afraid to stand up for your beliefs or they will take everything you got. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Bob Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The first two are both right. Bob is good ol' boy indeed. He is also a closeted homosexual man. Look at all the cliches: -Doesn't get married -Doesn't go to church -Doesn't care for the preacher -Doesn't have any friends -Overprotective neurotic mama -Still has a "pole" where channels (Johns) come and go -He kneels but doesn't bend over (not a bottom) -Not light in the loafers (euphemism for an effeminate gay man) hence Bob is in the closet and hiding it well DBT_dad has it right about progressing as the line says "till there ain't nobody like Bob anymore." |

"Making money you can't spend ain't what being dead's about" Best line in the song. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Aftermath USA Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I realize there is a face value (obvious) meaning to the song. I see another, more political, layer that tells a perfect rip-van winkle story of falling asleep around 1999 and waking up today in America. There's so much allusion to politicians, business, the media, common people, Wall Street, the national debt, etc etc. "Its all worse that we think" |

| Drive-By Truckers – Self Destructive Zones Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The key line is in the second verse. This is the story of the The Dragon, which is Rock'n Roll. Its a story of all the people that are chewed up and spit out in the end. Rock 'n roll is self destructive with the booze, women, drugs, travel, money, etc. Nobody cares if you're rich or fat or dead in the end because its just a party. There are many layers of self destruction such as the death of corporate rock in the early 90s to a some rocker getting injured in a fire to the hippies riding the wave to the pawned guitars. |

| Drive-By Truckers – 3 Dimes Down Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Working off the hint of Tom T. Hall's "A Week In A County Jail", we have the crime that resulted in the arrest. Late on a wild Saturday night, the driver of the candy apple red corvette has 2 girls ("the double mint twins") in the car and is in search of a "T" or Trojan. He probably stopped at a gas station and the machine in the bathroom only took a quarter. The driver only has 3 dimes, which doesn't solve his problem. So he has to drive a straight shot to the next station to get his package because he ain't getting his slice of the twins with out it. While en route to the next station you have one of the double mint twins puking chicken wings out the window and her friend holding on to her by her one belt loop. That is what keeps this incident into turning into a traffic death, hence the Sunday Night news and instead results in the driver's arrest. Bad luck. As for the final line, what else would a rock song be about? Sex drugs and rock n roll. This song has a lot of potential but doesn't reach it because its two verses down and one chorus shy. |
