It's about a decadent, indifferent society, intent only on their own gratification. (Our own, of course.) The title is a reference to the quote "let them eat cake", which often misattributed to Marie Antoinette. The French court at the time was unbelievably detached from the needs of the people; they lived in a country which was hemorrhaging money and inches away from imploding in on itself, yet they lived in lavish palaces and indulged exotic food and drink, expensive jewelery and whatever else their hearts desired. And outside, the peasants starved. This, couples with the lyric's dark imagery ("Sweet gluttony, she says to me "kill 'til you go insane with pleasure.") imply that we - as a collective - are Id-driven, egocentric and destructive, completely detached from the needs of others and the world around us, literally killing to get our kicks. And still, "diamond-studded fists demand more, more, more!" tl;dr: Society's excessive greed at the expense of everything. |
