Manic Street Preachers – Slash N' Burn Lyrics 11 years ago
'Gorgeous poverty of created needs'

^One of my favourite Manics lyrics. I think it refers to our greed-based society, where we strive to have too much, and luxuries have come to be seen as necessities.

The media gives 'Access to a living you will not see' in an attempt to get us to consume ever more. But if people lived more modestly there would be more to go around - 'all you need' is less than people think.

The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby Lyrics 15 years ago
I'd say it's about a prostitute. Her various clients are lonely to one degree or another so visit her, but ironically when she dies nobody is present at her funeral except the vicar - she was lonely herself.

'Wearing a face she keeps in a jar by the door' - a great line and quite ambiguous, but I think its the slightly different personas she puts on for each client - hence 'Who is it for?'

'Wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave' - the 'dirt' could be the general view of her as a whore, or perhaps he slept with her himself and was now trying to wash his hands of her.

'No one was saved' - her clients are still lonely and so was she when she died.

More broadly its about the emptiness of modern individualistic society, and interesting as I suspect it grows more relevant all the time.

Oasis – Listen Up Lyrics 16 years ago
This one certainly could be about a number of things. For me the first two versus are about oppression, alienation. The man in the suit could be the taxman.

From there on it sounds like he accepts these things and reaches out to a higher place "Gonna leave you all behind" where he doesn't mind being alone, whether this means emotionally or without God "I don't believe in magic"

A great song, very much open to different interpretations and so defiant and uplifting.

Manic Street Preachers – This Is Yesterday Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow this song is beautiful. It sounds like someone that wants to make a difference but can't because he is a mess himself:

And I stare at the sky
And it leaves me blind

- He looks for answers but can't find them, can't make sense of life

I close my eyes
And this is yesterday

- Admitting defeat, trying to forget the problems. I also like how 'this is yesterday' could refer simply to the passing of time - each day you just fall asleep and your problems are yesterday, you don't really care or you try not to.

Houses as ruins and gardens as weeds
Why do anything when you can forget everything

- Doing mindless activities is preferable to anything constructive, as it's a form of escape.

Melancholic song.

The Verve – Weeping Willow Lyrics 16 years ago
Among the best songs I've ever heard. The feeling I get from it (without analysing the lyrics too closely) is that its about living your life in a state of melancholy where you contemplate suicide. To me its like the sound of lost souls, however hashhead could well be right as the deep texture of this song makes me think its about something all-encompassing.

British Sea Power – No Need to Cry Lyrics 17 years ago
One of my favourites from the new album. It seems to be about acceptance, both of different people and of human emotions. "I don't mind if you're queer" - obviously very appropriate as BSP are from Brighton.

British Sea Power – Lights Out for Darker Skies Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it may have some environmental meaning:

"Welcome for the day or stay forever
There's things which we all need to navigate"

I think this relates to taking care of the earth longer-term (stay forever) rather than just through our lifetimes, and how every nation needs to work together to achieve this. Then the end of the song is optimistic (the future's bright).
